When it comes to beautiful weddings, thoughtful décor and design are key. Creative lighting, gorgeous centerpieces, and palette-coordinated dance floors have become de rigueur, but don’t forget what’s going on above your guest’s heads. The ceiling offers yet another statement-making opportunity.
We’ve got 10 ideas for wedding ceiling decorations that’ll have your guests craning their necks so much that you’ll need to include your chiropractor’s business card in your program. Plus we’ve provided real-life examples that will fuel your imagination (and your discussion with your skilled design team).
Balloons and ceilings are natural partners and, now, we’re seeing balloons providing chic ceiling décor for the most elegant and ethereal of events.
This celebration featured a sky of alabaster balloons that we think would be just right hovering over a wedding reception. Carolina Balloon Company created an installation with a dreamy vibe at this Gatsby-themed party from A Southern Soirée at Graylyn Estates in Winston Salem, North Carolina. A monochromatic sea of balloons is always eye-catching and chic.
We love how a variety of oversized balloons — some opaque white and others clear and filled with metallic glitter — defines the dance floor at this glam celebration planned by Nahid’s Global Events. The Renaissance Indian Well Resort in Los Angeles played host to the romantic wedding which featured a palette of clean and classic white blooms, from the design professionals at Shawna Yamamoto Event Design, accented by rich lavender lighting from Vario Productions.
This stunning ballroom wedding at The Breakers Palm Beach featured a chic palette of clean white and glam silver. The planners at Sara Renee Events worked with the design team from Tantawan Bloom to conjure a unique vision, intertwining giant silver balloons with cascading florals over luxe round tables with towering centerpieces — the two designs appearing to meet in between. Christian Oth Studio beautifully captured the scene as it evolved from elegant dinner to full-on dance party.
Ceiling floral installations aren’t a new concept — but we’re seeing some innovation in the use of a single flower type repeated over and over for a dramatic presentation, single blooms upended in avante-garde fashion, and florals arranged in chic geometric shapes.
Cream, pearl, ivory — this elegant reception from International Event Company transformed The Beverly Hills Hotel ballroom with stylish shades of all-white. Revelry Event Designers and Marks Garden created a luxe layered décor scheme with stunning “chandeliers” of white calla lilies arranged downward over tables, for glamorous focal points. We love the pops of green from the fresh stems and how the sculptural lighting adds whimsy and.
Florals hung in the most dramatic and gorgeous fringe over the dance floor at this elegant wedding at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York. The décor team at Preston Bailey conjured the vision with an ombré of pink and white blooms mixed with lush green vines. André Maier Photography captured the magical installation and every other stunning detail from the planners at Jennifer Zabinski Events. View the full event to see how the team created a unique ceremonial arch from a single color at the nuptials.
A circle symbolizes perfect unity, and what better place to display the shape than at a ceremony for the union of two people in love? We adore how this halo of lavender and pink blooms from Events In Bloom hovers over a beautiful wedding reception at The Houston Club in Texas. En Vogue Events planned a celebration infused with delicate color, a lovely counterpoint to the traditional all-white wedding.
3) LIGHT PROJECTIONS
A well-designed lighting scheme can set the mood for your celebration — shifting color and shape throughout your event to cue the transition from cocktails to dinner then dancing.
We’ve seen over and over how creative lighting can take an event to a whole new level. This elegant wedding a Vibiana in Los Angeles again proves that to be true. Rheefined Company planned an all-white reception that added a dreamy vibe with candlelight and gorgeous lighting on the breathtaking arched ceiling — conjuring the effect of light dappled through trees.
A towering domed ceiling isn’t just a dramatic architectural statement, but also an opportunity for décor innovation. We love how the lighting professionals at Suzanne B. Lowell Lighting brought color and glamour to the arched ceiling at the Boston Public Library. The tabletop floral décor from Lotus Floral Events seemed to transform with the light — sometimes appearing deep purple and, other times, hot pink at this gorgeous wedding from Nicole Simeral & Company.
Between the bridal bouquet and table centerpieces, wedding décor and flowers go together like “I” and “Do,” but blooms aren’t where beautiful organic displays begin and end. Rather than viewing greenery as the filler between flowers, make greenery the focal point for an indoor event that celebrates the great outdoors.
We adore lush vines and leaves dripping from ceilings over tables, creating an exclusive, hidden garden feel. At this fresh wedding celebration, The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in California provided the perfect setting for the luxurious boho vibe. The design team at Blush Botanicals curated a trio of cascading greenery and lighting installations that hovered over the reception, infusing natural beauty into the white and ivory festivities. Delicate strands of strung florals added light touches of color and whimsy.
Opulent chandeliers and deep green leaves “elevated” this fanciful wedding ceremony at Chez in Chicago. Sheer white drapery, beautifully hung and backlit by the full-service décor team at Kehoe Designs, created a luxe neutral palette, allowing the greenery to infuse rich color. We love the little pops of red in the artistic installation that mirror the burgundy bouquets carried by the bride and her bridesmaids.
Lanterns have been helping people find their way for centuries — help your guests find their way to a good time by adorning your entire ceiling with the lit classics.
This tented wedding reception from the expert planners at SQN Events went au naturale with time-honored low-fi flickering candles suspended in a dozen oversized lanterns centered above the dance floor. The lantern collection feels classic and celebratory against the pristine white tent and manicured floral centerpieces from Richard Remiard Design at Shore Acres Country Club in Lake Bluff, Illinois.
Edison bulbs are still prominently featured in every home design magazine and we love that they’ve found their way into beautiful events. The lights are striking enough that savvy designers, like the team from Haute Florals, allow them shine (pun intended) by framing the bare bulbs with simple wire shades for a glamorous, industrial feel. Sue Kelson Events planned a wedding celebration that felt organic and luxurious all at once. View the event hosted at Dallas’ Hickory Street Annex to see how the team lined the aisle with floor lanterns for a flickering path.
In this celebration, Ashley Douglass Events has planned a classic New England soirée with unique touches. The Greenwich Tent Co. raised a multi-pointed tent complete with flags, giving it the external appearance of the most luxurious circus you’ve ever seen. The designers from KD&J Botanica transformed the spot at the Country Club Fairfield in Southport, Connecticut. The team created a lighting scheme with Social Event Decor that included a collection of basket lanterns interwoven with greenery as a dance floor focal point. Alfred House Productions does it again with this dreamy vision for an island-perfect Montego Bay wedding at Round Hill Hotel and Villas. This elegant destination wedding was rich with lush greenery creating a tropical vibe, while candles and draped paper lanterns added romance to the evening reception. We love how the repetition of lanterns creates a stunning visual, as well as defines the perfect spot for the couple’s first dance.
Strands of ribbon, crystals, or tinsel suspended as a group make for an eye-catching effect. Create a dramatic photo op with a fringe tunnel or strategically fringe lounge areas, the bar, or tables to create distinct spaces.
We can’t think of a more perfect photo op than this all-white tunnel formed by thousands of suspended ribbons. The skilled planners at Premini Events worked with the creative design team at Gilded Group Décor to curate this gorgeous entry scene for a luxurious South Asian wedding at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami.
This glamorous all-white event celebrated the holidays with two luxe brands — Lancôme and Vogue — but we could easily imagine this alabaster fringe hovering over a gorgeous wedding reception. Celebrity Event Planner Mindy Weiss Party Consultants and the design team at Shawna Yamamoto Event Design conjured an event that mixed velvet and metal, glass and crystal at Delilah in Hollywood.
6) INSPIRED INSTALLATIONS
Make a big statement with blown glass, giant glowing stars, or thousands of paper cranes. Your only limit is your imagination.
Thousands of custom-cut white butterflies created an awe-inspiring installation for this gorgeous wedding ceremony in The Standard Club Chicago ballroom. Suspended on thin wires by HMR Designs, the butterflies fluttered as if real, creating an ethereal feeling at the Paulette Wolf Events-planned celebration.
When fashionable blogger Lindsi Lane got married, it was bound to be a stylish event. She began with an amazing event team, including the expert planners at Marcy Blum Associates and design luminary Preston Bailey. The pretty-in-pink reception featured all shades of pink roses suspended upside down over the custom floral-printed dance floor — creating a vision in bloom for the happy couple.
We know you’re probably thinking “ceiling + chandelier? Super innovative!” but hear us out. We love celebrations that mix types of lighting in creative ways and amp the volume with more of a good thing. In other words, we want all the chandeliers.
Vibiana in Los Angeles offered the perfect, elegant space to fulfill this Chanel-loving bride’s designer wedding dreams. Allure Events Atelier worked with the lighting and furnishing teams at Revelry Event Designers to curate a celebration that was black, white, and blush all over — then made even more stylish by strung white chandeliers lighting both the ceremony and the reception.
This Italian-inspired dinner accented the stars above Palm Springs with a multitude of chandeliers strung in the night sky. Lynden Lane Company curated an affair that meandered from garden nuptials to poolside cocktails, culminating in a tucked-in courtyard dinner, with tables decked in florals by the talented team at Keith Laverty — all under a blanket of dreamy light.
The Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas proved to be the perfect ballroom setting to host this cream and pink vision from the wedding planning team at DFW Event, Inc. The layered design from Bella Flora of Dallas included a tabletop dressed in low alabaster florals and sparkling candlelight, then higher suspended blooms, followed by a ceiling draped in sparkling crystals.
This chic design from Xquisite Events proves that you don’t need to fill a room with an element to make a statement. Creative Touch Party Design produced a glamorous reception that included a circle of pink roses suspended from the ceiling with strands of crystals as an additional focal point — in a Florida-perfect palette at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples.
A beautiful combination of white draping and flooring created a luxurious blank space for his vision in lavender from the planners at Sacks Productions. Floral designer Jeff Leatham and Revelry Events Designers teamed to curate this dreamy reception, with a dance floor defined by a square of crystal strands at this Coachella-based celebration in California.
