On a recent warm — but surprisingly temperate — August evening in Los Angeles, PartySlate hosted a colorfully-elegant dinner party for its most engaged community of premium event professionals. Top event planners, décor professionals, photographers, caterers, venue representatives, and more gathered to féte the growing platform and to mix and mingle with their peers at Kimpton La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood. Attendees included event luminaries like celebrity planner, Mindy Weiss, LA mainstay, David Pressman, and top designer, Eddie Zaratsian.
Jason Rhee, of Rheefined Company, planned the perfect summer celebration, with poolside cocktails followed by rooftop dining. Rhee and the design team from Rosewater (formerly Auroral Floral) curated a vibrant vision, using a rainbow of hues to represent, in Rhee’s words, “equality, inclusion, and love for all.” That means décor in all different colors, shapes and sizes — a nod to the idea that everyone, no matter their color, shape, or size, deserves love. The “love for all”-themed soirée featured color-blocking and on-trend ombré to delight partygoers.
The celebration’s stunning, creative invitations from A Fine Press featured layers of unique color-blocked shapes that slyly slid open to reveal a beautiful invitation inside, feeling completely modern and retro all at once. It was the perfect preview of the evening ahead.
Guests enjoyed classic summer cocktails like negronis and margaritas around the pool at the La Peer, while biting into passed fare that included cones of burrata topped with shaved truffles and crispy mini crab cakes with aioli. Poolside tunes were spun by Dart Collective.
Then on to the rooftop, where guests gathered on glamorous gold chairs from Taylor Creative Inc. for a welcome by Julie Novack, CEO and Co-Founder of PartySlate. She highlighted the website’s milestone of acquiring over 500,000 gorgeous, professionally-shot images and offered a quick overview of new feature, Idea Slates, which allow party hosts to save inspirational photos, as well as tag venues and event professionals for potential hire. Increasingly, event professionals are also using Idea Slates to introduce their clients to their own work, design ideas, and suggested venues.
Dinner was served in the La Peer’s clear-tented rooftop space. “I really like to respect the integrity of the space and look for ways to enhance it,” says Rhee. That was easy in the luxe tent, which boasts temperature control and built-in lighting and sound options. “I loved the clean lines and the blank canvas of it — the space really allowed me to be creative,” says Rhee.
Guests were greeted by a multi-colored vision that included unique florals in a chic ombré fade, centering long sleek white tables and chic black chairs from Taylor Creative Inc. When asked about the event’s color palette, Rhee responded, “All the colors!” — and they were all represented here in beautiful harmony. Diners located their seating area via a suspended glass installation, with names and numbers inscribed by Calligraphy Katrina. The calligrapher also personalized the tops of Lait candle boxes with each guest’s name, indicating their seat, as well as offering an aromatic take-home gift — which was also customized with each attendee’s company logo. Rhee says of the custom luxury soy candle, “I appreciate that it’s handmade rather than machine-produced.”
Table décor included gorgeous brushed gold-toned silverware and modern charcoal chargers from Greystone Table topped by soft, color-rich napkins from Nuage Designs (who also stylishly outfitted the poolside tables in flowy linens).
Between the two long king’s tables floated a stunning light installation constructed from lighting shaped into 3-D triangles from LightenUp Inc. Rhee suspended the lit shapes at odd angles and differing heights and curated a shift in hues throughout the evening to moderate the dinner’s vibe. Additional mood lighting included uplighting and palm-printed gobos. Meanwhile, Dart Collective assembled the perfect dinner playlist.
Dinner was served family-style with passed plates and delectable dishes like seared local black cod with a grain salad and salsa verde and risotto with squash blossoms, zucchini, and parmigiano reggiano. The communal nature of passing dishes from hand to hand fostered conversation in an evening meant to connect event professionals with each other. The evening ended on a sweet note with tiramisu and farmer’s market berries. In addition to their personal candles, guests left with sleek glass bottles of 24k gold-flecked luxury water from LUXWTR.
Jenny Quicksall Photography captured every lovely angle and smiling interaction, while Honey Reel filmed the celebration — including Novack’s sit-down interview with Mindy Weiss on trends, how to welcome guests at destination events, her personal experience with PartySlate, and more.
