Tuesday Top 5: Projection Mapping Creates Immersive Events
For this week’s Tuesday Top 5 — where we pause to marvel and share a specific element, image, or detail from events we love — we’re focused on the transformative ability of projection mapping.
Projection mapping is a digital lighting display capable of projecting images onto even the most irregular surfaces to create immersive environments. These displays can create illusion and movement as well as offer dimension and branding opportunities at events. With projection mapping, a space can transition from a field of flowers to an underwater seascape then from a sports stadium to a bustling city, all in a matter of moments. We’re highlighting our favorite projection mapping installations, chosen for how they created mood and furthered the theme of a television launch party, a Bat Mitzvah celebration, a wedding and several corporate parties.
Images by Lighting created an impressive display for the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere party. The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles proved a fitting backdrop for projection mapping with iconic images from the show including a dragon and series villain, Night King. The projection continued its transformation throughout the evening, later transforming into the faces of the show’s stars then a dreamy magical forest at the event designed by Billy Butchkavitz. Photographer Gabor Ekecs deftly captured the scene, despite its movement and changing patterns.
For this corporate event at the Sheraton Grand Chicago, Kehoe Designs strung mirrored disco balls from the ceiling and furthered the psychedelic vibe with colorful projection mapping. Each room had a slightly different projection but perfectly tied together thanks to a blue, turquoise, and purple color scheme. Other areas of the venue were decked out with similarly funky decor elements, like lava lamps and neon slinkies.
The stunning projection mapping at this Bat Mitzvah kept guests mesmerized, as their attention shifted from one gorgeous image to the next. United Projection flooded the walls of The Temple House with hot pink florals, romantic scenes from Paris, and the hustle and bustle of New York City streets. Event planner, Five Star Events, worked with Event Effects to balance the dramatic lighting with chic decor and lounge areas.
This timeless Virginia wedding had one especially unique element — mind-blowing projection mapping from Huqa: Live. Foxchase Manor was the perfect backdrop for the dramatic design elements projected onto the soaring ceilings. Understated floral centerpieces and traditional chandeliers completed the gorgeous reception decor.
Frost Productions somehow made a 94-foot-long 21,000-pound fiberglass blue whale come to life with a combination of projection mapping and ambient lighting at this incredible corporate event. The whale floats above the grand hall in the American Museum of Natural History, and purple and blue-hued spotlights gave guests the illusion that the giant creature was submerged underwater. Taking a cue from the event’s theme — Cuba — large-scale video projections on the balcony walls showed images of the locale bathed in glorious color.
