James Laughlin, the owner of J&L Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had it constructed in 1883, and in 1903, the well-known architect Grosvenor Atterbury had it remodeled so that it could serve as his winter retreat. It was modeled after Alhambra Castle in Spain and was constructed in the Mediterranean Revival and Asian styles. In the past, Sydonie was a preserve that encompassed 9,000 acres.
