In 2014, Jonathan Staples established Black Hops Farm with the intention of supplying locally grown hops to Virginia's burgeoning alcohol sector. This was the farm's primary motivation. This would be beneficial not just to the beverage sector but also to the agriculture in the area since it would encourage further hop growing. Given the importance of hops to the operation, it was a foregone conclusion that the property should include a brewery. Consequently, the Vanish Farmwoods Brewery came into being! Formerly known as the Freemason Inn, the property was renovated over a year and a half and now combines two historic structures into a unified inn and restaurant. Original details, including beaded chandeliers, pocket doors, and refinished hardwood floors, remain alongside a third-floor skylight that lights the building by day and moonlight by night. Once a working agricultural operation spanning more than 10,000 acres, the property retains several original structures, including its historic smokehouse and additional outbuildings, and continues today as a working flower farm under owners Foxie and Richard Morgan. The estate's grounds include lawns, shaded porches, gardens, orchards, vineyards, and mountain and orchard views, and host weddings, private events, and workshops for up to 240 guests. Indoors, the Formal Dining Room offers space for smaller catered luncheons and dinners, while a covered atrium tent with clear sidewalls provides weather-protected space from April through October.
