In later chapters, it served as Annie Leibovitz’s home and studio, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet’s performance space, and most recently, Chelsea Factory, whose sole mission was to support the artists, ensembles, and arts organizations of New York City.

Merchants Cigar Bar, which opened in 1996, is a modern lounge with a midcentury design that takes visitors back in time. True to the era of the opulent Havana High Life, indoor smoking is permitted, fresh ingredients are used in cocktails, and music is played until the wee hours of the morning. The architecture and furnishings in merchants are appealing and genuine; every component is a fresh take on traditional design. Visitors descend a beautiful mahogany paneled staircase that is accented with brass, illuminated by diffused light, and features floor to ceiling bronze mirrors.
