As a result of its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, the City Tavern Club operates as a non-profit organization with the mission of preserving one of Washington, D.C.'s oldest Federal-period buildings and the city's only remaining founding-era tavern. Construction on the City Tavern began in 1796 and the building served as both an inn and a major center of civic life in the surrounding area during the early Federal period. While in town, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers stopped by the Tavern for a drink or two.
