Once a rope factory producing twine and oakum for the shipyards along the East River, it was also the birthplace of the famous wartime ship, the USS Monitor. The Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse boasts the original brick and wood of the era and the building facade remains untouched from the 1890s. The lovingly renovated interior of original wood and reclaimed metal, with 15-ft ceilings and custom art pieces make a stunning, camera-ready setting for film, photo shoots, or special events. A 24-person capacity private roof deck provides day and nighttime options for outside activities. The street-level gallery offers a crisp white-brick gallery space with neutral gray concrete floors and walls stretching 15 ft in height. Merchants Cigar Bar, which opened in 1996, is a modern lounge with a midcentury design that takes visitors back in time. True to the era of the opulent Havana High Life, indoor smoking is permitted, fresh ingredients are used in cocktails, and music is played until the wee hours of the morning. The architecture and furnishings in merchants are appealing and genuine; every component is a fresh take on traditional design. Visitors descend a beautiful mahogany paneled staircase that is accented with brass, illuminated by diffused light, and features floor to ceiling bronze mirrors. Upon entering the lounge, visitors are greeted to the right by an opulent handcrafted brass bar, while couples and bigger groups are welcomed to the left by quaint tables and custom leather booths. Handmade Calico Wallpaper and lighting pieces from Triple Seven and Soho House are used to decorate the room.
