The property is defined by two chapters of American history: George Caleb Bingham, the renowned 19th-century artist and Missouri politician, lived and maintained a studio here where he painted "Order Number 11," his celebrated Civil War-era protest work. The Waggoner family, Pennsylvania millers known regionally for their "Queen of the Pantry" flour, owned the estate for 97 years and oversaw the elegant Victorian renovations still evident today.
