In 1823, John Miller built his hotel and tavern at the intersection of the Pike and Spickler Roads in the town of Spickler. It was one of the first stagecoach stops on the new National Pike when it was built. "There were large rooms adapted for dancing purposes, and young men and maidens from the neighborhood frequently tripped to the notes of the old time music in its spacious halls," wrote T.B. Searight of this well-known spot in 1894. The waltz was unheard of, and the figures ranged from the 'hoe down' to the cotillion, with the 'Virginia Reel' serving as the closing number. It was almost unavoidable that the old waggoneers were invited to participate in these festivities, and they did so with a fervor that could not be matched by the young men and women from the surrounding Clear Spring neighborhood." In 1864, the Miller's Farmstead site was the site of a Civil War skirmish that took place nearby. Confederate General John McCausland was planning a march from Clear Spring to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and he happened to pass through Mercersburg. Confederate Major Harry Gilmor led 200 men on a diversionary route along the National Road, giving the impression that the main strike was to be directed at Hagerstown, which was not the case. Gilmor was caught in an ambush by the Union army near Spickler's Hill, near Miller's Farmstead, and was forced to flee. It is still possible to see the bullet holes and cannon ball marks on the east wall of what was once Miller's Tavern, which was destroyed during the battle.

Ostertag Vistas is a 164-acre historic farm property tucked in a quiet valley near Myersville, Maryland, 15 minutes from both Frederick and Hagerstown. The grounds include three landmarked structures dating to 1711 — among them a circa-1700s stone pioneer home with a water wheel and a mid-1700s log cottage built by early German settlers — alongside rolling hills, a farm pond, streams, and meadows that attract blue herons, bald eagles, and migrating geese. The centerpiece of the property is a carefully restored 18th-century German Swiss bank barn, known as The Barn. Its 50-foot ceiling, original mortise-and-tenon timber frame held by wooden pegs, three stone fireplaces, and large glass panels looking out over the 164 acres make it the focal point for weddings and receptions. The Barn accommodates up to 200 seated guests and includes a bridal suite, groom's room, five restrooms, a loft stage, and a small museum — with barn doors that open to the surrounding landscape. Beyond the barn, couples choose from six additional outdoor ceremony settings across the property: a forested hollow with streams and fern beds, an open meadow with willow trees and a pond, a hillside amphitheater, a patio framed by two pergolas with farmland views, and the log cottage's garden with a stream and brick walkway.

The Historic McFarland House is a fully restored and modernized 1878 historic home site that is conveniently located near downtown Martinsburg's business district. On Thursdays through Sundays, we operate a fine dining restaurant, and we are the ideal location for a corporate event, a beautiful wedding, or a special gathering with family and friends. One of the things that makes our Historic House so special and unique is that it is more than just a place to show up for your wedding ceremony – it is also your home for the day. Couples appreciate the fact that there is "space" for everyone! The luxurious bridal suite allows you to prepare for your special day with your bridesmaids in comfort and style before the big day. Our luxurious bridal lounge, complete with vintage accents, serves as the ideal setting for photographs and private moments before you say "I do." The private groom's quarters provides the men in your life with something special designed specifically for them in a setting where they can relax and enjoy themselves on your special day. The team of wedding professionals at the Historic McFarland House will ensure that your special day is absolutely perfect, from the linens to the venue to the food to the last dance. Our team will personalize your wedding to your exact specifications and will always go above and beyond. Please contact us today for more information and to learn how we can assist you in realizing your dreams. Choose a venue that you can live with rather than one that you can't bear to be without. From your grand entrance to your last spin on the dance floor, we will assist you in defining your moment and making it last as long as you want it too.
