The Lakeside Inn, which first opened its doors in 1883, holds the title of being Florida's oldest hotel that is still in operation today. Surrounded by mature oak trees, gardens, open countryside, and lake views, the property offers two distinct places to say “I do.” Sunset Grove offers a lake-view ceremony for up to 150 guests, while the Garden Gazebo is set within the gardens for intimate ceremonies of up to 70. After the ceremony, guests can gather around the pool for cocktail hour before moving to the terrace for dinner and dancing under the market lights. Later in the evening, guests can even jump into the pool. At one time, it was considered to be the most important residential structure in the state of Florida as a whole. James Laughlin, the owner of J&L Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had it constructed in 1883, and in 1903, the well-known architect Grosvenor Atterbury had it remodeled so that it could serve as his winter retreat. It was modeled after Alhambra Castle in Spain and was constructed in the Mediterranean Revival and Asian styles. It featured citrus groves, sculptured gardens with rare plants from around the world, a dairy farm, a power plant, and even a bowling alley. In the past, Sydonie was a preserve that encompassed 9,000 acres. The mansion reflects an era of craftsmanship that is difficult to find in contemporary homes because it has 13 fireplaces, 11 bathrooms, and 13 bedrooms. Additionally, the mansion has beautiful handcrafted wooden moldings throughout.
