The original Houston Heights Fire Station No. 14 is located at Yale and 12th Street, approximately 4 miles north of downtown Houston, and is the last remaining municipal facility from the era when the Heights was a separate municipality. Houston's first public meeting hall, City Hall, fire station, and jail were all constructed in 1914 at a time when horse-drawn fire wagons were still the primary means of transportation. When it became Station Number 14 in 1918, it would remain that way until 1987, when it was permanently decommissioned for the last time. The Houston Heights Association voted in the early millennium to save the building and restore it to its former splendor, and they were successful. After repairing the building and installing vintage carriage-style doors in homage to the horse-drawn carriages of the early twentieth century, when the corral was located directly behind the fire station, The H.H.A. was able to reopen the corral. After being purchased by the Houston Height Association in 1979, the property has since grown to become one of the most popular outdoor wedding venues in the city of Houston. Meadows Place Community Center & Pool sits at the corner of Dorrance and Amblewood in Meadows Place, Texas, operated by the city's Parks & Recreation Department. Recently renovated, the Community Center is available for private rental and accommodates up to 165 guests for parties, meetings, and family gatherings, with sixteen 6-foot tables, 65 chairs, a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave, and access to a garden area and patio included with every booking. Facility cleaning is included after each event. Beyond the Community Center building, the property includes a swimming pool available for private rental in the evening or during public swim hours, with lifeguards on duty, and the adjacent Discovery & Nature Center offers a back patio and outdoor play yard for birthday parties, with animal encounters featuring a tortoise, goats, and other resident animals. Mama La is the secret ingredient in each of our Kim Son Restaurants, and she can be found in every location. Kim Su Tran La was born in Vietnam, and she, her husband, and their seven children fled to Houston in 1980, fleeing the communist regime that had taken over their country at the time. Mother-in-law Mama La was able to memorize more than 250 recipes before opening the first KIM SON Restaurant, thanks to her extensive knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine, which she received from her in-laws. In a short period of time, her food amassed a large following of thousands of followers, as well as the admiration and loyalty of many of Vietnam's top restaurant cities. The first KIM SON store was located in Vinh Long, but it was eventually closed as a result of the communist takeover of the country in 1975.
