20 civic-minded women gathered at what was then Royle School on August 2, 1923, to form the Darien Improvement Association, which was officially established the following year. It was their declared goal to "keep the town tidy, especially the public routes," as well as "get receptacles for rubbage," that they continued to convene at members' houses. They quickly grew in importance, exerting influence over the preservation of trees and the railroad embankment, advocating for home delivery of mail, supporting the town library, and taking a keen interest in the public schools. During these years, the DCA's primary focus was on providing assistance where there was a genuine need. This charitable commitment continues today, as we commemorate more than 75 years of awarding college scholarships to alumni of Darien High School in Darien, Connecticut. The Darien Improvement Association was founded in 1929, and two years later, the group changed its name to the Darien Community Association, Inc. to better reflect the community it serves. The DCA Thrift Shop opened its doors in October 1931 to provide much-needed work for local women during the Great Depression. Employees were tasked with washing and mending donated clothing, as well as repairing household items, which were then sold at extremely low costs. The Thrift Shop, which is located at 996 Post Road, is now managed by more than 50 volunteers. Originally built in 1950, Meadowlands is a historic mansion and property on Middlesex Road in the heart of the city. It was initially constructed in the Victorian architecture, but it was remodeled in the Regency style by its fifth owner in 1933, when it was purchased.

The Belvedere Estate, situated on more than 25 acres in Westchester County, is a one-of-a-kind property. The estate consists of a large house and many smaller structures scattered over the grounds, all of which include excellent historical elements from the 1920s. A wooded region and cliff with views of the broad Hudson River and the Tappan Zee Bridge provide a range of lovely and peaceful vistas. The Belvedere was once part of Philipsburg Manor, a 90,000-acre property and one of America's richest landholdings, and was built in the 1910s. Dr. Philip Gillette Cole bought it in 1928 and renamed it Zeeview. It was built by Florence and Casper Whitney and purchased by Dr. Philip Gillette Cole in 1928. The home at Zeeview looked out over the huge Hudson River and the "Tappan Zee" with ease. The Coles erected the Agora House and the Studio on the land and displayed their significant collection of American Western art, which was ultimately moved to the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The estate was purchased by Samuel Bronfman of the Seagrams Whiskey dynasty after Cole's death. After the Bronfmans' primary mansion in Toronto, the property was christened Belvedere. Belvedere became the headquarters of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification in 1972. The Woodlea Clubhouse was once a Vanderbilt Mansion that was constructed in 1892 and held by Colonel Elliot Fitch Shephard. Colonel Shephard was the founder of the New York Bar Association as well as the proprietor of the journal Mail and Express. 1910 saw the purchase of the mansion by Frank Vanderlip and William Rockefeller. The following year, 1911, saw the establishment of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club by a board of directors that included John Jacob Astor IV, Cornelius Vanderbilt III, Edward Julius Berwind, and a number of other notable individuals. The Sleepy Hollow Country Club has seen several improvements and transformations throughout the course of its history, propelling it to the position of being one of the best-rated golf courses and country clubs not only in New York, but also in the United States. We provide a sophisticated location for events such as weddings, family get-togethers, holiday parties, and business meetings. In addition, we host corporate outings that include activities such as golf, tennis, and swimming. When it comes to supper and dance, our Club House can host up to 240 guests. Between the middle of April and the end of October, our West Terrace Tent can comfortably host up to 400 guests (Heating and cooling available through an outside vendor at an additional cost).
