The Otto Kahn & James Burden Mansions

    7 E 91st St, New York, NY 10128, USA
    • Spaces for 250 Guests

The wedding of Otto Kahn and Adelaide Wolff took place on January 8, 1896. When they commissioned renowned architects C.P.H. Gilbert and J. Armstrong Stenhouse to design and build their private residence, they requested that no expense be spared in the construction. "It's a sin to sit on one's money," said Kahn, and as a result, their home in Manhattan became one of the largest private residences ever built in the city in 1918. The exterior of the building, which was constructed of French limestone imported from St. Quentin, is distinguished by its simplicity and dignity. The beauty inherent in Italian sixteenth-century architecture is demonstrated by the pilasters adorning the exterior of the second-floor balcony. The interior stairwell, halls, and entrance are all made of caen stone, and they have been finished with great care and consideration for detail. A replica of the Papal Chancellery in Rome was used in the construction of the structure. In addition to music, architecture, and painting, Mr. Kahn was a notable patron of the arts in general. He frequently hosted concerts and exhibitions of his treasures in his home, which drew a large number of visitors. Otto Kahn had his own music room built, complete with an Adam's ceiling, which allowed sound to easily circulate throughout the space. Musicians who have performed for Otto Kahn have included George Gershwin and Enrico Caruso, among others. It was only a few years after Mr. Kahn's death that the Convent of the Sacred Heart was able to purchase the mansion. It is now the location of Sacred Heart's upper and middle schools, respectively. The building at 7 East 91st Street was built in 1901 by William Sloane as a wedding gift for his daughter Adele, who had married steel manufacturer James Burden the year before. This mansion, designed by Warren and Wetmore, the same architects who designed New York's Grand Central Station, was designated as a historic site in 1974. The ballroom is located on the third floor, rather than the traditional first or second floor locations, thanks to an innovative design. To get to the top, a rotunda displays the beginning of the grand spiral staircase made of Hauteville marble, which leads to the observation deck. There is a beautiful mural by French artist Hector d'Espouy on the ceiling above, which is bordered by a Tiffany stained-glass ceiling light. Adele was well-known for hosting extravagant parties in the splendor of her French-inspired rooms. The formal banquet hall has walls made of Campan vert marble and a detailed ceiling depicting floral arrangements, which is a focal point of the event. Bonanno's painting of an old Italian garden, which stands twelve feet tall on the Northern wall, has remained in place to this day. These ballrooms are surrounded by twelve-foot-high doors paneled with oblong mirrors, which are modeled after the Galeries des Glaces at the Palace of Versailles. Mark Twain and Giacomo Puccini are just a few of the famous people who have graced these rooms. The house was purchased by the Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1940, just a few years after Mr. Burden's death. Today, it serves as the site of Sacred Heart's lower elementary school.

The Bushwick Starr is an award-winning nonprofit theater in Bushwick, Brooklyn, that has served as a home for artists, community, and bold new work since 2007. What began as a neighborhood arts space has grown into one of Brooklyn's leading venues for ambitious and cutting-edge theater, with a reputation for work that is boldly experimental. In April 2021, the organization purchased its permanent home at 419 Eldert Street — a 5,000-square-foot Bushwick building — and completed a full renovation in August 2024. The facility is LEED-certified and fully accessible, housing both performance and education programming under one roof. The Starr takes a distinctly artist-centered approach: creators develop productions in the same space where performances take place, rather than building work elsewhere and importing it. David Bouley was born and reared in the Connecticut town of Storrs. David's childhood spent on his grandparents' farm had a profound influence on him. Inspired by their French ancestors, he acquired a passion for preparing nutritious meals from scratch using well selected, freshly prepared components. David began working in restaurants at a young age, and has since lived on Cape Cod, in Sante Fe, and in France and Switzerland, among other places. His experience working with some of Europe's most recognized chefs, such as Roger Vergé, Paul Bocuse, Joel Robuchon, Gaston Lenôtre and Frédy Giradet, followed his studies at the Sorbonne University. After gaining valuable expertise, David went on to work in some of New York's most prestigious restaurants at the time, including Le Cirque, Le Périgord, and La Côte Basque, among others. He also worked as a sous chef in a San Francisco restaurant owned by Roger Vergé for a short period of time. David went on to become the chef of the Montrachet restaurant in TriBeCa when it first opened its doors in 1985. The New York Times published a three-star review of the restaurant shortly after it opened, attracting widespread notice. Private Dining Events and Catering provide us with opportunity to collaborate more intimately with our guests, as well as possibilities to share our passion for celebration in innovative and exciting new ways. As a result, when people taste the food that we have prepared, they can tell that it has been prepared with a lot of love. This is also reflected in the way we conduct our catering and private dining operations. All of our guests—new and returning—will hopefully have the opportunity to enjoy these experiences in the future, and I hope that they will continue to challenge and inspire us in the meanwhile. That is what motivates us to keep pushing forward.

In addition to being stunningly beautiful and modern, it is also daring in its own right. First and foremost, fusion cuisine blends seamlessly with the most recent gastronomic trends, and the best natural products are elevated to the level of internationally recognized specialties. Each dish on the Encore menu is the culmination of years of effort, gastronomic explorations, and a reverence for the culinary traditions. No matter what your expectations are, Encore, Brooklyn's largest restaurant with the friendliest atmosphere, is waiting to exceed them. Appetizers to die for, seductively sizzling sausages, succulent chickens, tender shrimp, juicy steaks, and much more are available at the restaurant. At a young age, I was inspired to pursue a career in the culinary arts. When I first arrived in the United States, I enrolled in courses in hotel and restaurant management at New York Technical College. The opportunity to work in France, at the prestigious Hotel de France, presented itself to me in 1998. Later, I made my way into the New York City restaurant industry, where I worked as a pastry chef at the Russian Tea Room. I was awarded two gold medals by the Societe Culinaire Philanthropique's Salon of Culinary Art for my work in the kitchen. Having worked at places such as the Glen Oaks Country Club, City Hall, La Grenouille, and Gascogne Bistro, I decided to branch out and open my own restaurant on Staten Island in 2007. Over the course of seven years, the Alor Cafe has evolved into a fine dining and music venue. Today, I am the proud father of three children, and I live in Brooklyn with my wife. As a business owner, I take pleasure in giving back to my community. I also appreciate that Staten Island's accessibility allows for affordable ownership while still remaining connected to the city's energy. I recently ended my relationship with my long-term partner, but I'm ready to move on to the next phase. My current project is the "Better Burger" Project for the Chefs of America Foundation, on which I am currently working as a member. I've taken on this responsibility with the goal of demonstrating to the Staten Island community that eating healthy, sustainable foods is a wise choice and that this is the direction in which the restaurant market is moving.

    Union Square Park

900 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10022, USA

Union Square has been a gathering area for about 170 years—for trade, entertainment, labor and political rallies, and relaxation. The park gets its name from its location at the crossroads of two important New York City thoroughfares, Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway) and Bowery Road (now Fourth Avenue). Union Square first opened to the public on July 19, 1839. Its paths, which wind through lushly landscaped lawns, were inspired by London's affluent residential squares. The design concentrated on a big central fountain, which was constructed for the completion of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842, and accentuated the park's oval shape (contained by an iron picket fence). Union Square became a significant commercial and residential area as New York City's downtown extended northward. The grounds of Union Square have hosted a variety of public gatherings, including parades, labor protests, political rallies, and official events such as the United States Sanitary Commission's Great Metropolitan Fair in 1864. Because of its significance in American labor history, the United States Department of the Interior designated Union Square Park as a National Historic Landmark in 1997. The park line will be extended south 14th Street, and the traffic island on which the Gandhi statue now sits will be incorporated into the park.

Kelli Connell's twenty-year study with one model is an introspective examination of sexuality and gender roles in intimate relationships that form self-identity. The project investigates identity polarities such as the masculine and feminine psyche, the irrational and rational self, the outward and interior self, and the motivated and resigned self. Body language and clothes define the dualities of the person by mixing several photographic negatives of the same model in each image. The significance of these photos rests in their portrayal of internal conflicts as an outward object: a photograph. The spectator is presented with "constructed realities" through these pictures. Rentals and Photoshoots Holding your event at the Alice Austen House gardens is an opportunity to participate in New York City history. With magnificent views of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, the historic venue offers outdoor leases for wedding ceremonies and shooting opportunities. The Alice Austen House offers a unique background for your wedding ceremony or photo/film shoot, with lovely period gardens, a landmarked Victorian Cottage, and a wide waterfront vista of the New York harbor. Only wedding ceremonies, business retreats, and film and photoshoots are now available for rent, and this historic New York location is the ideal setting for these events. Wedding ceremony rental fees are $750, which includes a site visit and consultation with our rentals experts, as well as administrative costs. Space limitations and gathering size guidelines limit the capacity of outdoor ceremonies and interior business retreats. Photo permits are required for any video or photoshoots on the ground, and cost $75 for up to two hours.
