  • Featured photo from The Maritime Hotel

    The Maritime Hotel

    363 W 16th St, New York, NY 10011, USA

As the National Maritime Union's headquarters, the nautically themed structure was originally designed by New Orleans modernist architect Albert Ledner in 1968 to serve as the union's headquarters. In the late 1940s, Ledner worked as an apprentice under the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, where he developed his own playful style. This fanciful approach to modernism was long dismissed by design purists, but The Maritime is now considered to be part of a wave of modernist architecture that is being viewed in a completely different light than it was previously. It had been open since 2003 but had undergone a transformation to better reflect its enviable location in the heart of Manhattan's fashion, art, food and business districts as well as the city's technology and creative industries. It was the first luxury hotel in the neighborhood, distinguished by its signature porthole windows, white-tiled exterior, and elevated outdoor terraces overlooking Ninth Avenue. As the modern, cool heart of Manhattan's Meatpacking District/West Chelsea neighborhood, the Maritime Hotel has maintained its position.

Theo Lieberman oversees the wine program, a list featuring an exceptional selection of vintages and delicious wines. Charlie Bird is rooted in all things New York - from the brick and mortar walls that date back to 1880, to a kitchen that only sources local ingredients for the menu, to the hip hop-inspired art that covers the walls. The menu reflects Chef and Co-owner Ryan Hardy’s thoughtful interpretation of what he describes as a nod to Italian cuisine, influenced by his passion for making cheese, curing meats, digging for clams, diving for urchin, farming produce and crafting handmade pasta. Co-owner Robert Bohr and Wine Director Grant Reynolds developed the wine list, which offers a small but compelling array of bottles. The 60-seat space is decidedly NY, manifesting an understated modern aesthetic designed to offer amazing food in an ambiance that is both sophisticated and approachable. From art shows to meetings, trade shows to sales, Metropolitan Pavilion places the highest priority on the safety of its clients and guests at all of its events. We strive to make our clients, guests, and visitors feel safe. Our staff adheres to all COVID-related requirements throughout the duration of every event they are involved in. And we are delighted to be able to share them with you. When events are taking place, we sanitize each and every event floor every 30 minutes. This includes surfaces that are frequently touched, such as door handles. We use 3M's hospital-grade disinfectant/germicide in a 5L container. We use the same product to sanitize all restrooms. We have hand sanitizers mounted on the walls in all of our restrooms and entrance lobbies, as well as in our offices and staff rooms. Our security team ensures that foot traffic is kept separate between designated entrances and exits on the premises. This eliminates the possibility of attendees arriving and departing at the same time. We also educate and train all of our employees on all COVID-19 protocols and guidelines, which are provided by Metropolitan Pavilion. The filtration in our HVAC system has been upgraded to general surgery grade performance. Our filters, which have a MERV rating of 13 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), are capable of controlling particles as small as 1.0–0.3 microns in size, including droplet nuclei. As much as we can, we assist our clients in planning and hosting their event safely and in accordance with CDC guidelines and industry best practices. Every effort should be made to keep guests and staff at a minimum of 6 feet apart when possible. When offered, hand sanitizer must be used immediately. Aside from that, full proof of vaccination is required at all indoor events, and we collaborate with our clients to ensure that guests arrive on time. This contributes to maintaining a steady, socially distant flow.
