The barn takes its name from its distinctive hourglass shape — an architectural curiosity designed by William du Pont, Jr. as an indoor horse training facility for the family's equestrian interests. Delaware acquired the estate in 1976, and the barn has since become one of the region's most flexible large-event venues. The barn's 32,000 square feet of open space can accommodate more than 3,000 guests and can be divided for more intimate gatherings. The State of Delaware acquired the estate in 1998 for $12.5 million, preserving it as part of the state park system.
