The Alexander Room and Terrace, which is tucked away in the heart of Metairie, is a true jewel. The International Brotherhood of Electricians (IBE) thought of and built the Alexander Room in 1984. The Alexander Room was designed to be a contender among Metairie's event spaces, and that was the goal from the outset of construction. The room was never advertised to the general public as a result of unforeseeable events. The Alexander Room was approached in 2014 with the aim of enlisting the help of Troy and Cindy Timphony of Hobnobber Café to take over the food, administration, and marketing of the space. Audubon Park's green spaces remain open to the public, but Audubon Nature Institute is committed to supporting the City and State orders to stay at home and practice physical distancing in the interest of everyone's health and safety in our entire community. Whitehall Plantation, which was established in 1857 for Francois Pascalis de la Barre and his family and operated as a sugar plantation until 1891, was the first of its kind in the United States. At the time, the plantation encompassed 8,000 acres that stretched from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana. According to historical records, life at Whitehall Plantation was filled with joy and celebration. Other plantation owners, their families, and friends were invited to enjoy Christmas Eve on the plantation, which made for a particularly joyous holiday season in general. The women donned their old-fashioned dresses and danced to Chopin's Minuet in G and Strauss' Vienna Woods with the males of their choosing to the tunes of Chopin's Minuet and Strauss' Vienna Woods. Because of its near proximity to New Orleans and its link to a dirt road known as Labarre Road, the property was chosen to serve as the headquarters for Union General Morgan during the Civil War. The grounds were transformed into a gambling casino in 1919, with dancing to the sounds of well-known orchestras taking place on the premises.
