Wolfgang Büchler arrived in Washington from Heidelberg, Germany, knowing no English and never dreaming he'd be making cakes for Presidents, Ambassadors, and so many of the lovely people who call the DC area home. Despite the fact that Wolfgang and his wife Carla have been innovating since 1975, they have not had much success. Customers returned crusty, European-style breads produced with imported flour when they brought them to Washington in the 1970s, thinking they were stale. "I refunded their money," Wolfgang explained. "Today, Washington craves our original breads, and we're always coming up with new recipes to satisfy their needs." The duo has left an indelible mark on the culture of the Capital City, now serving a third generation of consumers. Carla Büchler explained, "When you prepare a couple's wedding cake, they want everything to be flawless." "Right now, we're creating cakes for the grandchildren of that couple." Year after year, Heidelberg customers tend to return. "I place a high value on our baking." Carla and I first met when I hired her to work at the business. Now I'm collaborating with my children. I don't know what else to say except that success is sweet."
