I sometimes find it difficult to convey the kinds of pictures I enjoy taking, but this pretty well captures it. There are pictures that look great, but if the memory is gone, no one will ever look at them again. There are other images that are worth waiting for and taking because they speak to the heart. Since I've been photographing weddings for eight years—first in Europe and then on the west coast of America—I like to think that I've witnessed every type of wedding imaginable. From soggy mountaintops and opulent mansions to intimate backyard nuptials and small-town courtroom elopements. Every wedding is different and unique, but they all share the quality of being full of memories. There are gorgeous and ugly ones, as well as some messy ones. I think they are important to record. Not in a cliched, predictable way, but in a straightforward, unvarnished way. With all the confusion and gorgeous mayhem. The lovely flowers as well as the rain. Hugs, sunsets, but also wine that has been spilt. Memory over imagery. preserving rather than generating. That is how I think.
