Wishbone

Wishbone Restaurant opened in July 1990 at 1800 W. Grand Ave., with 23 seats, nine stools, and a half-dozen paintings by his mother, Lia Nickson. With its mix-and-match menu of side dishes like sautéed spinach, mashed sweet potatoes, and macaroni and cheese, his "southern reconstruction cooking"—Dixie standards like baked bone-in ham, blackened catfish, and Carolina crab cakes, prepared with a minimum of heavy oils, deep frying, or added sugar—his "southern reconstruction cooking" caught on quickly. At a time when Chicago's West Loop looked undiscovered terrain, Wishbone was an early participant in the neighborhood's transformation from a business sector to one of the city's culinary hot spots, opening a second Wishbone in 1992 with 170 seats at 1001 W. Washington. Wishbone moved to 161 N Jefferson Street in October 2018 after 27 years on Washington Blvd. Wishbone celebrated their 30th anniversary in March of 2020. It's disputed if breakfast is the most essential meal of the day, but it's far too often the day's most neglected eating opportunity. Though some people skip breakfast in favor of lunch, a variety of Chicago eateries, from traditional neighborhood favorites to newcomers with sweet, spicy, and savory concoctions, offer a good start to the day. Wishbone, a long-running West Loop restaurant, relocated to a new location in 2018, but the menu hasn't changed.
