Burning Coal Theatre Company

Burning Coal Theatre Company makes its home in the historic Murphey School Auditorium in downtown Raleigh, a former schoolhouse the company restored and reopened in 2008 after a $1.5 million renovation. Founded in 1997, Burning Coal reworked the building into a flexible theatre whose seating, platforms, and staging can be rearranged for each occasion. The auditorium is available to rent for weddings, receptions, performances, meetings, and presentations. Its adaptable open floor and historic character suit everything from wedding celebrations to multi-day corporate workshops, and the theatre's staff work with renters on lighting and mood to shape the room for each phase of an event. Burning Coal takes pride in being an inclusive wedding space that welcomes all couples, including LGBTQ+ couples. Renters and their guests have use of an adjacent parking lot along with free street parking on the surrounding blocks, and the venue provides accessibility services at no charge.
