Carter House Inns is a collection of four Victorian buildings situated in Eureka's historic Old Town district, along the edge of Humboldt Bay. Opened in 1982, the property was developed by owner Mark Carter as a replica of the Murphy House — an 1884 Queen Anne-style San Francisco mansion designed by architects Newsom and Newsom. Carter Cottage, nestled between the Bell Cottage and the main Carter House, pairs the privacy of a vacation rental with the full amenities of the inn. The cottage's large outdoor patio offers marina views and accommodates up to 30 guests, making it a fitting setting for intimate weddings, cocktail parties, and private celebrations. The living area and kitchenette provide a welcoming space for small dinner gatherings, while the patio opens the event to the surrounding Victorian streetscape of Old Town. The inn's on-site Restaurant 301 brings an award-winning wine program and in-house culinary team to every event, with services available for flowers, hors d'oeuvres, and wine pairings. Carter House Inns has been recognized with Wine Spectator's Grand Award every year since 1998.
