Cos House sits on Villita Street within La Villita Historic Arts Village, on the south bank of the San Antonio River in downtown San Antonio, one block from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the Hemisfair District. It is considered the oldest building in the "little village," and tradition holds that General Martín Perfecto de Cos surrendered to Texan forces there in December 1835 following the Siege of Bexar, giving the house its name. La Villita traces its history nearly 300 years, beginning as an informal 18th-century settlement on former mission farmlands before falling into disrepair and later being restored in the 1930s under Mayor Maury Maverick's preservation effort. Cos House is one of several outdoor venues within the village, set in tree-shaded grounds that lend a historic ambiance to weddings, private parties, and performances alike. As an outdoor venue, Cos House suits celebrations that can take advantage of its open-air, tree-shaded setting amid the arts village's historic architecture.
