Henry's Barn

Henry's Barn at the North Star Preserve is one of Northeast Ohio's most extraordinary event venues — a place where genuine history, architectural character, and natural beauty converge to create an atmosphere unlike anything else in the region. Built in 1885 on the Johnson Estate in Oberlin, the barn carries the remarkable legacy of Henry R. Thomas, an African-American man who, after gaining his freedom from enslavement, devoted his life as caretaker to this very estate and barn. That legacy lives in every timber. When the structure could no longer remain on its original site, Lorain County Metro Parks undertook a meticulous, piece-by-piece relocation and reconstruction — preserving the original timber-frame construction, the distinctive mansard-style roof, and the authentic barn siding now beautifully repurposed as interior walls. The result is a space that wraps guests in genuine 19th-century craftsmanship while delivering every modern convenience. Henry's Barn accommodates up to 100 guests for weddings, private celebrations, and special events. A deck patio opens to a serene pond with an illuminated fountain — a stunning backdrop that transforms every outdoor moment into something truly memorable. Reserved exclusively for private events and special programming, the barn offers an intimacy and historic resonance that makes every gathering feel like a once-in-a-lifetime occasion.
