Mayor Maury Maverick Plaza is the central gathering space of La Villita, a historic arts village on the south bank of the San Antonio River Walk in downtown San Antonio. The plaza takes its name from Maury Maverick, the San Antonio mayor and former U.S. Congressman who authored the 1939 city ordinance restoring La Villita, dedicating the district "to the promotion of peace, friendship and justice between the United States of America and all other nations in the Western Hemisphere." Today the plaza anchors an artisan and entrepreneur district of more than 25 shops and galleries showcasing local handmade goods, and hosts more than 200 events a year, from the weekly La Villita Market Days craft market to Craft Tuesday DIY sessions, dance parties, and cultural festivals.
