Meetinghouse

Meetinghouse is a 5,000 square foot exhibition and event space in the penthouse of the 1920s Historic Huntington Building. Featuring double-height, 14-foot ceilings, original windows with exceptional views of Downtown Miami, polished concrete floors and a full kitchen. It can seat 350 people, 450 standing. ​Meetinghouse is an interdisciplinary artistic and cultural space located in the historic Huntington building in downtown Miami. Inspired by past artist cooperatives such as Roycroft, Bauhaus, and the Shakers, we were founded in 2014 to further the discovery, dialog and expression across disciplines.Our programming includes exhibitions, lectures, screenings, performances, and printed materials and catalogs, bringing together local, national and international artists and designers based on shared processes and concepts observed in their works. A current event being hosted is Retreat and Relocation: A Colloquium on Climate Migration. Artists described the event in this way: As the land shifts, quakes, and floods with increasing frequency, it is evident that current modes of adaptation and mitigation are increasingly short-lived. Given the reality of time-limited approaches, as well as eventual reductions in both geography and investment, the Colloquium will consider retreat as a viable spatial alternative, with consideration of what is needed for design and policy to accommodate this possibility. Understanding that engineering and design models have established a leading theme for the last decade of discussion and planning in relation to climate change responses across communities, this Colloquium seeks to expand this framework to engage in a discussion of retreat applying a community-based focus. A panel discussion will provide an introduction to global strategies and policy analysis, and a facilitated discussion will enable local leaders to discuss applications in their own communities. The goal of this gathering is to open avenues of collaboration to explore new opportunities to evaluate conditions and impacts, and develop proactive strategies for facilitating retreat. Meetinghouse also hosts pop up events. ​On August 19th, meetinghouse and Ground Control Miami activated a three-day pop-up shop to support future programming, as well as bringing some summer revenue to the participating artists. Their goal was to support the scene by collaborating with the local artists and to create the financial means to produce cutting-edge exhibitions, performances, and publications with no costs to the artists or audience.
