About Pembroke Springs Retreat
Pembroke Springs Retreat is a whole-house vacation rental set at the base of Great North Mountain in the northwestern Shenandoah Valley, on 175 acres of hiking trails, a fishing pond, and a tennis court. The house is decorated with Japanese artwork and furnishings alongside Virginia antiques, and features five bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, a large dining room, and cozy sitting areas. Two authentic Japanese baths ("ofuro"), fed by fresh mountain water and heated to 104 degrees, anchor the property alongside a commercial kitchen and a downstairs sitting room. The retreat has hosted weddings, bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthdays, yoga retreats, and corporate events in its private, secluded mountain setting, with events limited to 25 guests. The Sunrise Room and its adjoining bathroom are ADA-compliant, and the retreat is wheelchair accessible.

- What do people do at Pembroke Springs Retreat?
- Guests spend their time relaxing in the Japanese baths, hiking, fishing, playing tennis, or mountain biking. Guest rooms have no televisions, though common areas offer TVs with Roku. The retreat sits near George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park, with wineries, breweries, farm markets, antiques, and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley nearby in towns including Wardensville, Strasburg, Middletown, Winchester, and Front Royal.
- How do the baths work? Can guests visit just for the baths?
- Pembroke Springs Retreat is not a spa, but it features authentic Japanese baths using natural mountain water heated to 104 degrees. As in Japan, guests wash outside the bath before immersing. Children who are not toilet trained are not permitted in the baths, and day visits to use the baths are not accepted.
- Do you offer food? Can guests use the kitchen?
- Pembroke Springs Retreat now offers family-style catered dinner options for guests upon request. Guests may also use the commercial-style kitchen, equipped with a six-burner range, a three-compartment sink, a microwave, and an outdoor grill; paper products are provided, though dishwashing must be done by hand.
- Can guests connect to the internet?
- High-speed internet is available at Pembroke Springs Retreat, though performance cannot be guaranteed.
- Can guests check in early or stay late?
- Guests are advised to check in before dark, as the surrounding country roads are not well lit. Early check-in or late check-out requests should be sent well before arrival and will be accommodated when possible; arranging a driving service without a firm contract is not recommended.
