Southold Historical Society

The Southold Historical Museum was established in 1960 to "promote interest in and education about Southold's history, as well as to bring together those who wish to discover, acquire, preserve, maintain, and exhibit historic sites, buildings, and relics." Our mission has remained focused and clear since our inception. The Southold Historical Museum protects and interprets artifacts that engage, educate, and connect visitors to the history and culture of Southold. We support programs that encourage the long-term preservation of our cultural heritage. The Southold Historical Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions on Long Island's North Fork. The Museum, which opened in 1960, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting our region's rich history. The Museum does this through maintaining a headquarters and archive, as well as a number of historically noteworthy buildings that house some of the Museum's large collections. Enjoy! Territory Acknowledgement: The museum is situated on Corchaug Nation land. There is no history of Southold without the history of Corchaug. Our work is inextricably linked to the Corchaug people, as it has been for thousands of years. We pay our respects to the Indigenous Peoples of the past, present, and future. Weddings The museum grounds of the Southold Historical Society are located in the picturesque village of Southold, in the center of the North Fork. A stunning backdrop for your wedding day is provided by sprawling green lawns and over a dozen old structures. Buildings spanning from the 1750s to the 1900s are rich in history and charm, providing unique photo opportunities. The grounds are a great place for a memorable ceremony, with many antique homes, outbuildings, a schoolhouse, and barns as a backdrop.
