The Thomas H. Swope Memorial is an outdoor historic ceremony venue set on a hilltop in Swope Park — Kansas City's largest urban park — with views over the park's lagoon and surrounding grounds. The structure is a U-shaped colonnade in the Greek Doric style, featuring twelve 14-foot-tall columns supporting an entablature. Designed by landscape architect George Kessler based on plans drawn in 1915, the memorial was dedicated in 1918. Eight bronze medallions mounted on the colonnade's backdrop each honor a species of tree native to the park, while a decorative lantern with carved lion heads and feet crowns the stone court. Stone guardian lions flank the stairs leading up to the court — the sculptural work executed by Charles Keck, former president of the National Sculpture Society. The memorial marks the final resting place of Thomas H. Swope, the Kansas City philanthropist whose 1896 land donation established what would become the 1,805-acre park that surrounds it. Managed by Kansas City Parks & Recreation, the venue brings a rare combination of architectural formality and open-air parkland setting to outdoor ceremonies.
