About Waterworks Museum

The creation of the Boston Water Board in the summer of 1876 was a significant step forward. The Cochituate and Mystic Water Boards were superseded by the new board. The board recognized the necessity of a high service station at Chestnut Hill in its initial report. A station like this was required to supply water to the city's higher areas. One of the Holly-Gaskill pumping engines was replaced in 1922 with a Worthington-Snow pumping engine. The Worthington-Snow engine was capable of pumping nearly twice as much as the Holly-Gaskill engine it replaced, allowing the High Service Station to double its capacity. Special Access ticket holders will receive an in-depth guided tour as well as access to a two-story sub-basement where they will be able to see the giant Allis pumps that transported 30 million gallons of water per day to Boston residents. Participants will also have the unique option to climb the Allis or Leavitt engines for a closer look at these massive machinery. Because of the height of the safety rails, all participants must be at least 46 inches tall. Before being allowed to participate in the Special Access Tour, all participants will be required to sign an accident and responsibility disclaimer acknowledging the dangers connected with climbing the high and tight pathways. This waiver will be given to you when you arrive. Please email tracy.lindboe@waterworksmuseum.org if you would like to review it ahead of time. Have you ever wanted to learn more about the historic structures surrounding the 150-year-old Chestnut Hill Reservoir? On this one-hour walking tour, you'll see a variety of architectural specimens from Boston's Golden Age, hear about how the reservoir site evolved over time, and learn how the entire Waterworks complex led to the development of one of the country's first urban water systems.
