History The City of Fort Lauderdale, formerly known as the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, believes that a sense of history is essential to understanding human experience. As a result, the City of Fort Lauderdale collects, preserves, and shares material from our community's past so that present and future generations can better understand their predecessors, their community, and themselves. In order to further education, we provide public lectures and workshops, publish teacher resource materials, organize school and general group tours and activities, support scholarly research through significant research assistance, maintain a 1907 house museum and three other 1905 historic structures, as well as a museum of changing and permanent exhibitions, and operate a research center that has been in operation for 51 years without interruption. The New River Inn Museum of History is a lovely and unique wedding location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that is set in the middle of Riverwalk Park on the New River. Historic Stranahan House Museum
Historic Stranahan House is an all-outdoor location that is excellent for a range of special events and corporate activities. Located along the New River, right off Las Olas Boulevard, in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. The museum is close to a number of hotels, as well as the beach, the airport, and the seaport. There is plenty of parking nearby, as well as a Water Taxi launch site. We have space for wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions for up to 200 people. Lush landscaping, an extended River Patio, and new walkways were recently completed site enhancements. An additional courtyard, event pavilion, and catering kitchen will be added to the site in the future. It is the oldest and most historically significant remaining edifice in Fort Lauderdale, as well as the city's most visited attraction. This is the point at which everything began. The Stranahan House is the repository for the history of a family, a home, and the founding of a city. It was erected in 1901 by Frank Stranahan, who is widely regarded as Fort Lauderdale's founding father, and his wife Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, who was the area's first schoolteacher. Located in Broward County, it is the oldest surviving structure in the county, and it has functioned as a trading post, post office, town hall, and residence for the Stranahans. Located on the banks of the New River, the home is a traditional wood-frame construction with expansive porches and a breathtaking view of the river. When the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and the Fort Lauderdale Board of Realtors completed a meticulous restoration of the home, it was officially opened to the public as a historic house museum in 1984.
