The resort's grounds sit atop the former Fort Crockett, a coastal defense installation established in 1897 whose eight-foot-thick concrete walls form part of the property's foundation; one of the fort's original gun emplacements now supports the resort's Gulf-view wedding gazebo, and another anchors a swimming pool. The San Luis name itself predates the resort by centuries — before 1783, explorers referred to Galveston Island as San Luis, a piece of island lore the resort carried into its own name.
