The restaurant is located in the Russian Hill district of San Francisco. The restaurant Nisei is a celebration of the Japanese-American ancestry of its owner, Chef David Yoshimura. The tasting menu is inspired by the cuisine of California, which is known as Washoku. Washoku, which literally translates to "harmony of food," is the Japanese equivalent of "home cooking." The art of Washoku centers on a set of guiding principles that emphasize harmony in color, sense of smell and taste, and respect for the ingredients used in food preparation.
