The Clubhouse's beauty and warm ambience are suitable for the Club's various member functions. The University Club of San Francisco was established with the goal of providing a gathering place for alumni from various colleges. The Clubhouse's first location was rented at 722 Sutter Street. It was eventually regarded too tiny to accommodate the rising membership, despite its elegance. In the historic earthquake of 1906, the Club's original location at 722 Sutter was demolished, and the majority of the building was devoured by fire. 800 Powell, once the Stanford Mansion's stables, was chosen as the location for the new Clubhouse. The Club's new edifice was designed by renowned architects Walter Bliss and William Faville.

Standing beneath marble columns, ornately gilded balconies and an elaborate frescoed ceiling, it’s easy to imagine this building’s allure when it first came on the scene as a flashy French restaurant and San Francisco’s grandest nightclub. Opening in 1907 on the heels of the great earth- quake, the 5,000-square- foot concert hall symbolized the city’s renewed optimism.
