Following a nine-year, $8 million restoration completed in 1999, the building was transformed from an abandoned structure into a thriving arts center and event venue. It holds Smithsonian Affiliate status and membership in New York City's Cultural Institutions Group. Three distinct rental spaces serve a wide range of private events: a theater accommodating up to 190 guests for galas, receptions, and performances; a 1,500-square-foot gallery suited for intimate gatherings of up to 100; and a 2,000-square-foot outdoor garden with tree-shaded lawns for up to 150 guests. It was founded in 1938 by the saxophonist Henry Minton (from whom the establishment took its name), and over the next decade, Minton's Playhouse became the scene of a revolutionary shift in jazz performance. Minton's Playhouse is regarded as a pivotal location in the history of jazz in New York City.
