A beautiful piece of the Blue Ridge foothills, discovered by J. Willard Marriott Sr. in 1951, reminded him of his boyhood days on his family's farm in Utah, and became the inspiration for the creation of Marriott International. Following his purchase of the property, he began meticulously restoring the primary historic buildings and their surrounding grounds, and he continued to purchase contiguous parcels of land, including Fiery Run Ranch, resulting in the creation of the 4200+/- acre Marriott Ranch. With a modest herd of registered Hereford cattle, a large flock of black-faced sheep, and the breeding of quarter horses, J. Willard was able to bring the farm, which had been known as "Fairfield," back to life over the next few years. Affectionate horseback rider and outdoorsman, J. Willard would spend as much time as he could on his Fauquier County property, noting in his diary, "A beautiful place, hard to leave..." The historic James Marshall Manor House (circa 1814), which serves as the focal point of the Inn at Fairfield Farm, is located in the heart of the 4,200-acre Marriott Ranch and is the centerpiece of the Inn at Fairfield Farm. The Space Downtown is a private event and dining venue in Charlottesville, Virginia, created in late 2010 by chefs and longtime business partners Tim Burgess and Vincent Derquenne. The building's history goes back further: the pair opened their first restaurant, Metropolitain, in the same location in 1991 and ran it until 2003, when they sold the restaurant but kept ownership of the building. Ashton Creek Vineyard is a family-owned and operated vineyard, tasting room, and event center set about 20 minutes south of Richmond, in Chester, Virginia. Historic Blenheim is a Civil War-era estate in the City of Fairfax, Virginia, operated by the City as an event venue and interpretive center. The centerpiece is a Greek-Revival/Georgian brick house built around 1859 for the Willcoxon family, where Federal soldiers left graffiti on the interior walls during the winter of 1862-63 — a detail that has made the property a stop on both the Virginia Civil War Trails and the Northern Virginia Graffiti Trail. The adjoining Civil War Interpretive Center houses a gallery with a full-sized replica of the house's attic and glass walls that look out over the historic grounds. Set on 12 secluded acres, the property combines that historic backdrop with modern event amenities, making it suited to weddings, anniversary parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, and meetings alike — even a routine meeting takes on a different character in the space. Housed in a converted 1891 tobacco exchange and inspection warehouse in Danville, Virginia's historic River District, Cottontail Weddings preserves original architectural details — exposed brick, heavy timber supports, and original hardwood floors — while adding modern crystal chandeliers and color up-lighting for contemporary celebrations. The building operated under several owners, including the Liggett and Myers Company from 1930 to 1970, before its renovation into an event venue; Cottontail has hosted weddings and celebrations there since 2017. The venue's 3,600-square-foot Main Ballroom seats up to 175 guests, with a preferred range of 100 to 150 for comfort and flexibility, and can host both ceremony and reception in the same room. Fort Boykin Historic Park is an 18-acre county park in Smithfield, Virginia, built around a triangular earthen fort that has stood on this bluff along the James River since colonial times. Originally christened "The Castle," the fort was constructed by colonists over roughly six months after a 1622 attack on the Bennett's Welcome and Basse's Choice settlements prompted the House of Burgesses to order a lookout fortification. It was refortified again during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, and today remains open for self-guided tours through its historic earthworks. Beyond its military history, the park offers natural habitat and beach access along the James River, making it a distinctive backdrop for small outdoor ceremonies and gatherings. The site accommodates rentals of 50 guests or fewer, with reservations arranged through the Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation Department. The Williamsburg Winery sits on Wessex Hundred, a 300-acre estate near the James River. Founded by Patrick and Peggy Duffeler, who planted the property's first grapevines in 1985 and released its first vintage in 1988, the estate now includes more than 50 acres of vineyard and over 150 acres of woods. For weddings, the winery offers ceremony and reception spaces ranging from the raised Wessex Lawn, overlooking newly planted vineyards and a duck pond, to Wessex Hall, a 4,600-square-foot banquet room built in 2000 in the style of a 17th-century cruciform timbered structure, lit by iron chandeliers and featuring two stone fireplaces imported from Bordeaux, France.
