The Mandarin Garden Club is a nonprofit garden club and event venue established in 1945, set on Loretto Road in the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. The clubhouse was built in 1963 on land purchased by club members, and the mortgage was paid off in 1987 — a milestone the club celebrated by burning the note. Surrounding the clubhouse are demonstration gardens maintained by Master Gardeners of Duval County, featuring a butterfly garden, bromeliad garden, native plantings, herb and vegetable beds, and a ginger display. Wow! It seems like only yesterday when we refurbished the landmark neighborhood fixture of the little purple house in Wynwood, Miami, Florida. The first order of business? Choosing our name. I was completely unaware of the ways in which a single life event that occurred in our family would alter the path that the future would take for our ranch. To fast forward to the present day, my heart is brimming with joy as I reflect on the numerous weddings that we have been privileged to celebrate here over the years. The privilege of seeing couples take their relationships to the next level by exchanging their vows beneath the same ancient and massive oak tree that served as the setting for my daughter's wedding is wonderful in and of itself. But even many years after our couples have said their goodbyes and rode off into the sunset, one of my favorite things to do is watch them react to the arrival of their first child as a family. The joy and satisfaction people feel when they make significant life changes, such as buying their first house, changing careers, or getting a promotion! And most importantly, it brings me a great deal of joy to know that everything started right here and I get a lot of satisfaction from watching them enjoy their anniversaries year after year.
