The History of Rockwood Manor Retreats and Events After leaving Washington, D.C., Carolyn Gangwer Caughey (pronounced "Coy") traveled west along the Old Conduit Road (now MacArthur Boulevard) to her newly purchased estate near Great Falls. Mountains of tall cedars, poplars, and oaks cover rock-studded hillsides that gently slope down to a stream valley. A name for Mrs. Caughey's country estate was suggested to her by the natural elements almost immediately: Rockwood. Carolyn was a well-to-do socialite whose ancestors traced their roots back to the American Revolution. She was also a successful businesswoman who had a passion for architecture and a keen eye for profit in the real estate market. According to Who's Who in the Nation's Capital, she is "active in civic betterment, particularly in relation to better-constructed and better-planned homes," among other things. It also mentions that she was responsible for designing one of the largest apartment buildings in the nation's capital at the time. As a result, many of her close friends were not surprised when she revealed that she had designed and personally supervised the construction of her new home. Visiting auctions and antique dealers in the area on a regular basis assisted her in the furnishing of her country estate. Celebrations This historic manor house, which can accommodate up to 120 guests for a ceremony on the wooded Patio, followed by cocktails on the Veranda and a sit-down dinner in the rustic elegance of Brooke Hall, is the focal point of our property. When the party is over, the Hoover Hall ballroom and festive Sun Porch are transformed into a two-level party space for dessert and dancing. Flexible floor plans allow you to personalize your guests' experience and the flow of your event, allowing you to create an event that is completely unique. The cost of a single day event ranges from $1,660 to $4,600. Please see the rate sheets linked to below for more information. Meetings Because of its close proximity to Bethesda, Tysons, the 270 corridor, and Washington, DC, Rockwood Manor is an excellent choice for your next business meeting. In our six flexible meeting spaces, we can accommodate groups ranging from 12 to 80 people. Alternatively, you can book the entire house for your conference, wellness retreat, or strategic planning sessions. Take, for example, a strategic planning session for your organization that is inspired by a group hike to Great Falls, the rushing Potomac River, and the gentle swaying of the trees. The Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park is a national heritage site and event venue situated along the waterfront in historic Fells Point, Baltimore. Operated by the Living Classrooms Foundation, the campus occupies one of the city's oldest waterfront industrial buildings — a restored Sugar/Coffee House whose exposed brick walls and industrial wood beams anchor the character of every event held here. The site honors the legacy of Frederick Douglass and Isaac Myers, who founded the first African American-owned shipyard on this very stretch of harbor in 1868. Five distinct spaces accommodate gatherings of nearly any size, from intimate dinners to large outdoor celebrations. The Founders Room seats up to 200 and opens to the adjoining Bearman Gallery, while the open-air Promenade and Courtyard can welcome as many as 900 guests for a reception at the water's edge. Cardin Pier extends over the harbor, where working vessels including the tall ship Lady Maryland occasionally dock alongside an event in progress. Catering is provided by an exclusive roster of approved vendors, and all events benefit from four hours of setup time and two hours of breakdown included in the rental. The park's events team, led by Director of Events Natalie Halpern, coordinates private bookings for weddings, corporate gatherings, and special celebrations throughout the year.
