Originally the Federal Courthouse, Custom House, and U.S. Post Office for the Upper Midwest, it was restored in 1978 and now operates as a cultural and event center managed by Minnesota Landmarks, a nonprofit organization. More than 300 Minnesota-hardy plants were selected to survive the region's winters, and the garden follows traditional Japanese design principles with restrained use of flowering plants and an emphasis on green tones and texture. Open from spring through fall, sunrise to sunset, the garden serves as a backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photography.
