Thornewood Castle, located on four acres near American Lake and studded with old growth fir trees, is a historic mansion. It was built in 1908 by Chester A. Thorne and is the only one of its sort on the west coast. The house measures 27,000 square feet and is decorated in the Gothic Tudor style. Thornewood, originally built as a single family property, has been painstakingly restored to its former glory as an elegant country inn. Explore the hallways where presidents and luminaries have trod before you. Presidents William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt stayed in our presidential suite on their visit to Washington. Explore the grounds, which include a beautiful half-acre sunken English perennial garden. American Lake is a lovely place to swim, fish, and boat. Take pleasure in watching spectacular sunsets from the hand-tiled lakeside patio. Stained glass window insets from the Middle Ages, as well as antique furniture and artworks, decorate the mansion. Built in 1803, the Stone House is the oldest residence in Roxbury, New York. The home was originally used as an inn along a travelers trail passing through the mountains from Bovina. That trail is now used for recreation, but much of the old structures and toll booth still remain and are quite interesting to explore.

Our facility, which is housed in a historic Charleston home, incorporates much of the reclaimed, comfy charm that makes LEON'S so appealing. Imagine reclaimed wood, high ceilings, exposed beams, old masonry, and the same lighting as our LEON'S dining room, along with a custom-built community table that seats 24 people. This compact area can be expanded to accommodate an extra 36 people by extending onto a private brick patio that is attractively lighted and manicured. Our food and beverage offerings are meant to promote the kind of relaxed, welcoming, family-style atmosphere that one expects at the best Lowcountry events. If you're searching for a lunchtime event, we also welcome parties of up to 40 people at Melfi's, our sister property, for a sunny and elegant Italian lunch. Leon's Fine Poultry & Oyster Shop is a welcoming Southern eatery that serves fried chicken, oysters, a variety of salads, cheap beer, soft serve, Rose on tap, a large selection of grower Champagne, and excellent cocktails. The restaurant is located in an ancient body shop that had belonged to Leon Ravenel, a long-time Charleston industrialist. Much of that industrial heritage is preserved in the room, which includes working garage doors, concrete flooring, and some souvenirs from Leon himself. We wanted a cozy, lived-in, familiar oyster bar when we opened the restaurant, so we drew inspiration from some of the places we'd visited around the South. After a lunch at a popular New Orleans soul food joint, we decided to add fried chicken to the menu, which has since become a LEON'S standard. We tried to put in a lot of veggies and salads to lighten it up. We've had the good fortune of being welcomed in Charleston and beyond. Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, Conde Nast Traveler, New York Times, James Beard Foundation, Travel & Leisure, EATER, and others have recognized LEON'S as a leader in Charleston's food scene, and we look forward to welcoming you to our tiny piece of King Street.
