Tucked on the West Marietta bend in the Howell Station Neighborhood, The Dogwood at Westside Paper is a quick ride to Georgia Tech, Blandtown, The Works, the West Midtown corridor, Midtown Atlanta, and the Downtown Atlanta attractions. The terraced front entrance leads into the curated pre-function and ballroom. Bathed in calming neutral tones, the space is flooded with natural light leading into the ballroom equipped with room-dividing curtains. Cooks & Soldiers draws its inspiration from the people and the cuisine of the Basque Country in Spain and France. The Spanish call it Pais Vasco; the Basque say Euskal Herria. Regardless of nomenclature, it stands for thousands of years of fierce independence, cultural autonomy, and unrivaled cuisine. Pintxos are the Basque answer to tapas. From the word for “thorn,” a Pintxo is traditionally served on bread, pierced with a toothpick. Pintxo Bars represent the casual, convivial aspect of Basque dining, where guests order for the table over a glass of Txakoli (crisp, slightly bubbly Basque wine) or tart Basque cider. Pintxo Bars are loud, vibrant and celebrate the joy of companionship and conversation over the formality of coursed dining. Cooks & Soldiers seeks to recreate this environment with our Pintxos Tradicionales, served on toast, and our Pintxos Especiales, composed expressions from our chefs. Fresh oysters from the Alabama coast and Maine sea scallops to entire roasted Georgia trout are just a few of the dishes that visitors may enjoy while dining on high-quality, sustainable seafood sourced from the top suppliers in the country. While you're enjoying beer, wine, and handcrafted cocktails, The Optimist will transport you to your favorite seaside haunts with dishes such as hickory-roasted fish and raw oysters, as well as beach-food favorites like as hush puppies and lobster rolls. Our light-filled, semi-private dining space is ideal for hosting business events such as receptions, showers, and celebrations, as well as birthday parties and other social gatherings. We are able to close The Optimist to the general public for you if you are hosting a wedding or other fully private event. Our Oyster Bar Private Dining Room can accommodate up to 16 guests, who will be seated at two parallel tables in the room. The area is filled with natural light and is decorated in a seaside style. The sun sank, and the low Inman Park buildings glowed in the yellow light. It seemed everyone was out. A crowd inside the ship laughed loudly, and we noticed the putt-putt lighthouse. After the meal, we descended below deck past a wall screening “Jaws” to what appeared to be someone’s basement circa 1977. We were served by stewards in orange. The warm wood paneling. The tiki candles. The photos of Farrah and Leif. A DJ spun records. There was a rotary telephone on a coffee table, and I picked it up and dialed the phone number I had when I was kid. Someone answered, and for a moment I thought I was talking to my past.

​This historic property is located on the edges of Kirkwood and Edgewood. It’s been home to history, innovation, film projects and now your good times! Originally built in 1904 by Pratt Engineering, this location was used for the production of fertilizer bombs during WWI. Later it was used to develop and patent liquid carbonated gasses, which was then purchased by The Coca-Cola Company while it was still a start up. The Pullman Company Purchased the property in 1926, expanded it and gave it its iconic name. Pullman was renowned for luxurious rail travel across the country, and used the site to repair passenger and cargo cars. The Pullman company was also one of the largest employers of African American men during segregation: The Pullman Porters. These men formed the nation’s first African American labor union affiliated with the American Federation of Labor: Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids. Founded by civil rights activist A. Phillip Randolph, the union aimed to improve the working conditions and treatment of African American railroad porters and maids employed by the Pullman Company across the country. As travel by rails died down, the site was abandoned becoming a popular destination among not only local street artists, but as a filming location. In 2017, the site was purchased by Atomic Entertainment, who have redeveloped the site as an “entertainment destination of the south” serving as a creative and cultural focal point. This has ushered in a new era for the site with the advancement of film and television productions such as Hunger Games, Fast and Furious, Baby Driver and Bad Boys 3. Now that the Pullman Yards is open and operational, our aim is to bring fun, arts and culture to the neighborhood, the city of Atlanta and all its surrounding areas. Pullman is host to rotating exhibits, two on-site restaurants, and Emory’s Science Gallery.
