    Domaine Carneros

1240 Duhig Rd, Napa, CA 94559, USA

Domaine Carneros is a singular winery best known as a small grower-producer of sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, estate vineyards, and a breathtakingly beautiful château. Founded by the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger, Claude Taittinger's search for a worthy U.S. counterpart began in the late 1970s. In 1987 he selected a 138-acre parcel in the heart of Carneros, Napa Valley, and chose Eileen Crane to oversee the development of the Taittinger style in Carneros. In 2020, after 33 years, Crane passed the torch to a new CEO, Remi Cohen, whose role carries on the Taittinger tradition of visionary female leadership. Ushering in a new era of Domaine Carneros, Cohen brings two decades of experience in all facets of the wine industry to the château. The heart of Domaine Carneros has always been the méthode traditionelle sparkling wines, with distinctive styles ranging from the classic vintage-dated Brut cuvee to the luxury Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs. In 1992 they added rich, complex Pinot Noir to their portfolio and their passion for sparkling and still wines continues to grow. All of their wines proudly hail from the Carneros appellation, and 100% of their fruit comes from our six estate vineyards comprising 400 acres. As anyone who has driven between Napa and Sonoma can tell you, the Domaine Carneros château is a stunning regional landmark. Join them for tableside service on the terrace or in the salon and savor the spirit of the Northern California wine country. The Domaine Carneros château is a California wine country landmark. Inspired by the classic 18th century Château de la Marquetterie in Champagne, France - home of Champagne Taittinger - the Domaine Carneros château was completed in 1989. Situated atop a knoll surrounded by estate, the château brings to Carneros the elegant style of the French wine country. With its grand staircase, formal gardens, expansive outdoor terraces, marble-floored fireside salon and breathtaking views of vine-covered hills, it is an incomparably royal setting for savoring fine sparkling and still wines, and for events. From using owl boxes for natural pest management to taking grape pomace from every harvest and feeding it to local cattle, Domaine Carneros has farmed sustainably since the late 1980s. In 2013, they became certified sustainable. Each year, they go through an assessment and audit for ensuring that our sustainable efforts are always-improving and benefit the environment, their employees, the community, and the grapes and wine.

    Churchill Manor

485 Brown St, Napa, CA 94559, USA

Edward Churchill and his wife, Mary, moved to Napa from Rochester, N.Y., in 1878, when he became the cashier of the James H. Goodman Bank (later sold to the Bank of Italy), which in 1930 became the Bank of America. He and Mary built the Churchill Manor in 1889 on Brown Street (then named Grant Street), considered to be the original street of the Napa founders. Neighboring mansions included one owned by George Goodman of the Goodman Library on First Street, and the Manasse Mansion, built by an executive of the Sawyer Tannery. At nearly 10,000 square feet, Churchill Manor was reputedly the largest home in the Napa Valley at the time. After finishing it, Churchill built what is now known as Cedar Gables, which he presented to his son as a wedding gift in 1891. Times were good for these early aristocrats. The Napa River was an active steamship route, and San Franciscans would sail up the Napa River to attend large parties at the Churchill Manor. Churchill also owned the Golden Ribbon Beer Company and the Tokalon Vineyard near Rutherford. He died suddenly in 1903, when, in a flu-induced delirious state, he mistakenly drank from a bottle of carbolic acid. His wife and daughter continued to live at the Manor and later his granddaughter, Dorothy, lived there. It is rumored that the family suffered financially during the Depression and Prohibition. In any case, Dorothy began to take on boarders. Most of these were teachers, who by all accounts lived a rather “Bohemian” lifestyle. She began to rent the beautiful mansion out for large weddings. The residence left the Churchill family in 1956. The next several tenants included the Napa State hospital, a commune and a group of male college students who earned rent by hosting weddings there. The Mansion, however, was falling apart, and plans were made to tear it down for apartments. Horrified preservationists went to work to save it, and the Churchill Manor became the first Napa residence to be placed on the National Registry. A Hawaiian couple bought the Mansion in the 1980s, intending to refurbish it for use as a bed and breakfast inn. By that point, the neighborhood had fallen from its former glory and was considered to be a bad part of town. The project was more than the couple could handle and they threw in the towel in 1987. About this time, Brian Jensen, an engineer and contractor from Montana, had been living and working on the Peninsula. He had done some remodeling work for Joanna Guidotti, then a vice president and tax attorney with Bank of America, and the two had started dating. Although he liked many things about the Bay Area, Jensen was homesick for the kind of community spirit he’d known in Montana. He loaded his pickup truck and drove from city to city looking for it. He found it in Napa and invited Guidotti to join him here. The two were having breakfast one morning when Guidotti saw the ad for the Mansion in the Register. They drove by to check it out, made an offer on it, and moved in on New Year’s Eve in 1987. Although the museum quality redwood interiors fortunately had not been damaged, the place was in bad shape. Part of the floor on the second story bowed over six inches. It rained inside the sunroom as much as it did outside. The two set to work and within a month had their first room ready for rent, which they offered for $75 a night. By spring the following year, weddings were again being held on the grounds. A few years later, Jensen tried his hand in the kitchen, hoping to reduce some of the catering costs. Today, couples book there in part because of his skills as a chef, and guests report that they use his recipes, such as Flambeed Amaretto Shrimp, in kitchens all over the country. Thanks to their hard work, the home has been restored and is one of the most beautiful architectural treasures in Napa. Every room is a work of art. By their count, Jensen and Guidotti have hosted 1,000 weddings that 100,000 people from all over the world have attended, and Guidotti has coordinated all of them. They credit their staff, most of whom have been there for over 10 years, with much of their success. Over the years, Churchill Manor has been recognized in virtually every “best of” lodging guidebook in the country. Everything they do in and to the house has to hold up to a litmus test of being functional, pristine and preserving antiquity. Although both are intense about their work, they are warm, caring and easy conversationalists: the perfect hosts for a bed and breakfast.

    Artesa

1345 Henry Rd, Napa, CA 94559, USA

Over 25 years ago, Spain’s oldest winemaking family, Raventós Codorníu, ventured to a new world: a sea-facing hillside in the Napa Valley, with rocky soils and a favorable coastal climate. It was here in Los Carneros that the family planted new roots, and built upon a 460-year winemaking legacy to create the next generation of estate-grown, artisan wines. We opened in 1991 as Codorníu Napa with a mission to make California’s top sparkling wine. As the vineyard proved its pedigree for still wines, the Artesa name was born in 1998. Artesa has since become a leading producer of distinctive wines from the varietals for which Los Carneros and Napa Valley are best known: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Raventós Codorníu is the oldest family winery in Spain, with roots dating back to 1551. Seventeen generations of the founding family have built a legacy of innovation, from the world-famous inventors of Cava, Codorníu; to the oldest winery in Rioja, Bodega Bilbainas; to the single largest estate vineyard in Europe, Raimat; to the jewels of Legaris in Ribera del Duero and Priorat’s Scala Dei; to the high elevation vineyards of Septima in Mendoza, Argentina; and of course here at Artesa. Winemakers from each estate collaborate and bring a legacy of expertise together. The Artesa Estate Vineyard is set in the steep foothills that straddle the Los Carneros and Mount Veeder AVAs at the southern tip of the Napa Valley. Its proximity to the San Pablo Bay, three miles south, provides the cool, maritime climate ideal for pinot noir and chardonnay. The 150-acre vineyard is planted along five distinct ridges, with a variety of slopes and soils. To farm such a complex site, the vineyard is divided in over fifty distinct blocks, tailoring our efforts to the unique character of each block. Most of the vineyard is dedicated to pinot noir – 80 acres are planted in 28 blocks with ten distinct clones. The steep, south-facing slopes of the ranch are dominated by shallow, alluvial soils of weathered sandstone and shale, with long exposure to sunshine and maritime air. These are ideal conditions for growing pinot noir that is clean, balanced, concentrated and distinctively aromatic. Nearly fifty acres are planted to chardonnay in 13 blocks, primarily on northeast-facing slopes that offer some protection from wind and late-afternoon sun and are dominated by Haire Clay Loam soils. Chardonnay from these sites express ripe citrus character and distinctive minerality. Twenty acres are dedicated to twelve micro-blocks specially suited to boutique Estate bottlings. Albariño is planted on two of the coolest sites; low-lying, gentle slopes in the shadow of Milliken Peak. Six blocks of Tempranillo are planted on gravelly soils in the warmest sites, and the very highest ridge of the property, above the 400 foot elevation boundary that separates Mount Veeder from Carneros, are four blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Artesa Estate Vineyard is farmed sustainable in accordance with our certifications for Napa Green Land and Fish Friendly Farming.

    Charlie Palmer Steak Napa

    1260 1st St, Napa, CA 94559, USA

A steakhouse is more than just meat. It’s another American big idea reflected in the generous portions and robust flavors of straightforward classic cooking. Despite decades of revolving food fads, the steakhouse remains an American institution, made even more significant when staged by Charlie Palmer, known for his signature Progressive American style in both food and design. Lighter and leaner than the dark wood and dim lit model, Charlie Palmer’s neo-traditional steakhouses have a wide appeal: more modern retreat than dated men’s club. Leaning toward organic design, natural palette décor with the use of striking textural accents, Charlie Palmer’s steakhouses pose a sleek, contemporary rustic-luxe setting that translates and replicates well, making each seem like a heritage location no matter where it lands. As a steakhouse, they do place an extra focus on buying meat directly from small producers who are focused on giving them cleaner, more fully flavored beef. And they also continuously upgrade the core customary cuts with meat that adheres to new sourcing practices. But they don’t drop the ball on quality sourcing any of our entree offerings, whether by land or by sea. Their chefs also work to expand on produce-driven dishes that are thematically relevant to the steakhouse concept while pleasing an ever-growing vegetarian population. And because the main courses often come with the freedom to mix and match side dishes, it’s easy to please any group in a steakhouse setting, no matter how varied. That’s what makes Charlie Palmer Steak perfect for entertaining: like a private club without the dues. Welcome to Charlie Palmer Steak at Archer Hotel Napa, where celebrated chef Charlie Palmer shapes menus in bold American style, inspired by the surrounding Napa Valley agricultural and viticultural regions. Rooted in the pursuit of the best ingredients and a straightforward approach in the kitchen, Charlie Palmer Steak Napa showcases artisanal American beef under the influence of local wine country flavors. Private dining is offered when the occasion calls for more than just a reservation. From a birthday party for 12 to an anniversary fete for 50, let their hospitality wizards provide the planning you need to create a memorable event.

He initially settles in San Francisco but in 1881 turns his attention slightly north, purchasing a parcel of land in the southern end of nearby Napa Valley, against the forested ridges of Mount George. There he founds Cedar Knoll Vineyard and Winery, where the Palmaz Vineyards and family reside today, just off what’s now known as Hagen Road. Hagen will become one of the true pioneers of the Napa Valley: His noteworthy wines are featured at the San Francisco Opera House and served to some of the finest people of the city, according to contemporary newspaper accounts. Hagen even wins a silver medal for his brandy at L’Exposition Universelle de Paris 1889 World’s Fair. Hagen dies in 1895, leaving behind 450 acres of “fine vineland.” While Cedar Knoll is lauded for its wines (and spirits), Hagen’s descendants don’t share his passion. With the arrival of Prohibition in 1919, the property’s winemaking endeavors are abandoned until the Palmaz family purchases the property in the late 1990s and sets about restoring its former glory. Julio and Amalia Palmaz have always believed that if given the proper attention and care, their land can produce excellent wine for generations. Along with their children, Florencia and Christian Gastón (and Christian’s wife, Jessica Louise), they set about creating a winery that leverages tradition and technology in the service of crafting great vintages. The result is a 600-acre estate with 64 acres of vineyards that produce truly modern vintages, thanks to the technology harnessed in support of the art of winemaking. At Palmaz, they believe in farming the individual vine, not the vineyard. Tradition and technology seamlessly come together to give them insights into the needs of each vine. While nothing replaces the knowledge gained from walking through the vineyard, personally touching each vine, technologies such as advanced Geographic Informational Systems give the winemaking team an understanding of what vines need both above- and below-ground. By combining farming techniques from the organic, biodynamic and erosion-control philosophies, the Palmaz family has created a truly sustainable farm that will produce great wine for generations to come. From diverse cover crops in the winter to a deficit-irrigation program in the summer, tending to the land is a year-round program. The vineyards are nestled at three different elevations, from the hills around the estate to the crest of Mount George, and feature 46 distinct vineyard blocks. The complexity of the terrain results in a variety of micro-climates, all of which influence grapes in unique ways. Each parcel features a distinct rootstock and clonal combination that contributes a special characteristic to the resulting wines.

These are the forces that propel us forward in our lives. These are the characteristics that we seek in ourselves and others. Our company, TYGE, was founded on the strength of the human spirit, and we infuse every bottle of wine we produce with our ruggedly individual approach to winemaking. We have been farming in the same way for four generations, since a time when lands were still undiscovered and wild places were still unexplored. Our wine club was founded on a nostalgic sense of adventure: to venture forth into uncharted territory with good wine, good people, and good times, and to have a good time doing it. Creating the finest, most flavorful, and fearless wines that reflect our own sense of adventure is our mission. We hope to broaden the horizons of our palates through our work. Our founder is fond of saying that "every bottle is an adventure," and this sentiment extends beyond the flavors contained within. The wine we drink, like the food we eat, is meant to be shared—it is a source of shared adventures, just like the food we eat. We'll drink, eat, mingle, and discover new things at Club Tyge as a group. Our goal is to motivate you to seek out and experience new things on your own. Additionally, you can be the author of your own story.
