In 2014, Jonathan Staples established Black Hops Farm with the intention of supplying locally grown hops to Virginia's burgeoning alcohol sector. This was the farm's primary motivation. This would be beneficial not just to the beverage sector but also to the agriculture in the area since it would encourage further hop growing. Given the importance of hops to the operation, it was a foregone conclusion that the property should include a brewery. Consequently, the Vanish Farmwoods Brewery came into being! Bleu Frog Vineyards was born out of a perfect storm of timing, dreaming, hard work, and a little bit of luck. The Kernan family spent over 30 years serving in the United States Navy as true advocates for freedom and patriotism, with the intention of one day planting long-term roots of their own. After retiring in 2014, the quest for a farm life began in Loudoun County, where, as luck would have it, the historic White Stone Farm was posted for sale two years later. The undulating hills, rocky environment, and proximity to Leesburg drew the Kernans in as the ideal location. The property alterations were first inspired by grape cultivation and a healthy lifestyle, but the family soon recognized they could provide more to the community, the grape growers, and the wine makers of Northern Virginia. With the help of the harvest gods, they were able to produce their first wine in 2019, and their vision for the land began to grow. Jan's passion and expertise in the French culinary arts, as well as Joe's longtime service as a 'frogman' in the United States Navy SEAL community, inspired the moniker Bleu Frog. Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast Inn is a historic farm dating to 1805, set on 47 rolling acres with mountain views in Middleburg, Virginia's wine country, about 20 minutes from Dulles Airport and an hour from Washington, D.C. What began as a one-room log cabin grew through the 19th century into the estate known as Hillcrest, which withstood a Civil War battle between Union and Confederate forces before falling into disrepair; new owners restored the property in 1965 and renamed it The Briar Patch, adding a swimming pool and gardens while preserving its historic character. Today the estate hosts weddings and private events for up to 200 guests in The Fox Den, a nearly 5,000-square-foot event building with a large caterer's kitchen and space for ceremonies, cocktail receptions, and dinner and dancing. The grounds also offer multiple outdoor ceremony sites and a pool area for rehearsal dinners. Overnight guests can stay across the property's main house, cottage, and Chicken Coop, accommodating roughly 32 guests, with the one-bedroom cottage often used as a bridal suite.
