St Francis of Assisi (the namesake of San Francisco) is depicted alongside many historical personalities who helped develop the present stronghold on this site in Victor Arnautoff's famed fresco, which was produced in 1935. The fresco was painted before the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and you can see the Army Corps of Engineers debating the ideas on the right side of the wall. Willemina Ogterop (1881-1974), the first woman stained-glass artist west of the Mississippi to be inducted into the Stained Glass Artists Guild, designed the remarkable stained-glass windows. Ogterop was a multiculturalist who was involved in a number of peace and humanitarian groups and believed that everyone should practice compassion, which is a philosophy that many SF couples adhere to. A visit to the Presidio Chapel is a necessity because of these little-known artistic gems.
