Founded in 1965 and funded by community residents rather than local government, it has operated for more than 60 years as an independently run gathering place for Central Florida families, organizations, and businesses. The campus includes three distinct event spaces: the East Wing, suited for banquets and receptions of up to 175 seated guests; the West Wing with Stage, the largest space on the property, accommodating up to 220 seated or 400 standing; and the intimate Rotary Club Room and Bar, ideal for gatherings of up to 32 guests. A lakeside patio overlooking Lake Lily provides a setting for outdoor ceremonies and cocktail receptions. Joe was a popular choice for roles as a commentator in movies, commercials, and news broadcasts; he had even been nominated for an Academy Award. His nickname was "The Voice." After many years of keeping a busy schedule and commuting from New York to Miami, he and his wife Doris were looking for a peaceful getaway retreat they could get away to. Because Joe had a passion for horses, he established the Aragon Ranch, where Doris later began cultivating beautiful gardens for the family to enjoy. She planted dozens upon dozens of camellias and azaleas in the garden. In point of fact, she has all of her grandchildren represented by their very own individual camellia bushes. Their son Malcolm took over the garden design and began working alongside Doris to sell tropical plants all over the country after taking over the business from his parents. At one time, it was considered to be the most important residential structure in the state of Florida as a whole. James Laughlin, the owner of J&L Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had it constructed in 1883, and in 1903, the well-known architect Grosvenor Atterbury had it remodeled so that it could serve as his winter retreat. It was modeled after Alhambra Castle in Spain and was constructed in the Mediterranean Revival and Asian styles. It featured citrus groves, sculptured gardens with rare plants from around the world, a dairy farm, a power plant, and even a bowling alley. In the past, Sydonie was a preserve that encompassed 9,000 acres.
