The San Jose Woman's Club occupies a 1929 California Mission Revival landmark in downtown San Jose, designed by the Wolfe & Higgins architectural firm and listed as Landmark #32 on the City of San Jose Historic Register. The building's tiled features, crafted by ceramicist Albert Solon, and its original 3,000-square-foot ballroom floor reflect nearly a century of careful preservation. The venue accommodates up to 200 guests across a selection of rooms that clients choose and combine to suit their event — whether a ceremony, reception, buffet, or multi-room celebration. The ballroom includes a stage with opening and closing curtains and supports a full range of seating and setup configurations. Our History The Club at Castlewood traces its origins to the famous Hacienda del Pozo de Verona estate, which was built by George and Phoebe Hearst, the parents of publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst. From 1891 to 1919, Phoebe Hearst's Hacienda, created by Julia Morgan, served as her house and sanctuary. At "the house of hospitality." hosting parties and gatherings for up to 300 people was normal. In the 53 room mansion, the Hearst's reputation for throwing a grand party was certainly upheld. Local businessmen bought the land in 1924, and the mansion served as the clubhouse for the original Castlewood Country Club. The name was chosen because it matched Phoebe's home's wooded hills and castle like aspect. Private Events at The Club at Castlewood: There is no such thing as a huge plan or a little gathering. Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate occupies 50 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a crescent-shaped valley near the southeastern edge of Oakland, California. At its heart stands a 37-room Neoclassical Revival mansion built in 1899, surrounded by sprawling lawns, duck-filled ponds, and gardens whose design was informed by John McLaren, the landscape architect best known for shaping San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The estate is owned and operated by the City of Oakland's Parks, Recreation & Youth Development department and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Four distinct outdoor and indoor event spaces accommodate gatherings ranging from intimate ceremonies of 50 guests on the Mansion Veranda to receptions and corporate events of up to 200 guests in the Garden Pavilion. The estate is available for weddings, receptions, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, corporate retreats, seminars, and family reunions. The San Jose Clubhouse has been organizing intimate social gatherings for our San Jose neighbors for over a century. Within these walls, we celebrate weddings, graduations, Quinceaneras, bar/bat mitzvahs, festivals, infants, birthdays, and memorials. This Arts and Crafts bungalow, established by the ladies of We and Our Neighbors, is a historic landmark and California's oldest continuously utilized women's clubhouse. The San Jose Clubhouse welcomes you to host your next event with fewer than 80 attendees. This charming establishment has been meticulously preserved and upgraded to retain its original charm. It's perfect for modest weddings, anniversaries, bridal or baby showers, memorials, business meetings, birthday parties, boutiques, art displays and music recitals, and more, thanks to its comfortable masonry fireplace, hardwood floors, and stained glass lighting. "We and Our Neighbors" are our auxiliary and celebration guides, for which we are grateful. We and Our Neighbors, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, owns the San Jose Clubhouse. "We and Our Neighbors is dedicated to fostering educational and social events among its members, conserving the historical clubhouse, and supporting important causes in the adjacent as well as broader community," their mission statement states.
