The History of Rockwood Manor Retreats and Events After leaving Washington, D.C., Carolyn Gangwer Caughey (pronounced "Coy") traveled west along the Old Conduit Road (now MacArthur Boulevard) to her newly purchased estate near Great Falls. Mountains of tall cedars, poplars, and oaks cover rock-studded hillsides that gently slope down to a stream valley. A name for Mrs. Caughey's country estate was suggested to her by the natural elements almost immediately: Rockwood. Carolyn was a well-to-do socialite whose ancestors traced their roots back to the American Revolution. She was also a successful businesswoman who had a passion for architecture and a keen eye for profit in the real estate market. According to Who's Who in the Nation's Capital, she is "active in civic betterment, particularly in relation to better-constructed and better-planned homes," among other things. It also mentions that she was responsible for designing one of the largest apartment buildings in the nation's capital at the time. As a result, many of her close friends were not surprised when she revealed that she had designed and personally supervised the construction of her new home. Visiting auctions and antique dealers in the area on a regular basis assisted her in the furnishing of her country estate. Celebrations This historic manor house, which can accommodate up to 120 guests for a ceremony on the wooded Patio, followed by cocktails on the Veranda and a sit-down dinner in the rustic elegance of Brooke Hall, is the focal point of our property. When the party is over, the Hoover Hall ballroom and festive Sun Porch are transformed into a two-level party space for dessert and dancing. Flexible floor plans allow you to personalize your guests' experience and the flow of your event, allowing you to create an event that is completely unique. The cost of a single day event ranges from $1,660 to $4,600. Please see the rate sheets linked to below for more information. Meetings Because of its close proximity to Bethesda, Tysons, the 270 corridor, and Washington, DC, Rockwood Manor is an excellent choice for your next business meeting. In our six flexible meeting spaces, we can accommodate groups ranging from 12 to 80 people. Alternatively, you can book the entire house for your conference, wellness retreat, or strategic planning sessions. Take, for example, a strategic planning session for your organization that is inspired by a group hike to Great Falls, the rushing Potomac River, and the gentle swaying of the trees. President Lincoln's Cottage

- 1 Event Space
A HOME THAT HAS CHANGED HISTORY President Lincoln’s Cottage was built for banker George W. Riggs in 1842. Architect John Skirving designed the house, situated on a hilltop overlooking downtown Washington, D.C. in the Gothic-Revival style popularized by A.J. Downing. During the Civil War, President Lincoln and his family relocated to the Soldiers’ Home for the “hot season.” The tranquil surroundings at the Soldiers’ Home offered refreshing breezes, a relief from White House protocol, and a place for the President to reflect on all-consuming decisions about military strategy, domestic policy, and foreign relations. Though often viewed as a sanctuary for the president, Lincoln was no less consumed with the war and issues of freedom and slavery here. In many ways, life at the Cottage brought the first family closer to the war and its human cost. At the Soldiers’ Home, Lincoln made some of the decisions that defined his presidency. He met and consulted with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Secretary of State William Seward, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and many others. He also formulated his ideas on how to bring about an end to slavery during the war in what became the Emancipation Proclamation.
