Historic Fort Wayne occupies a stretch of Detroit's riverfront with roots that predate the fort itself. The land hosted the signing of the Treaty of Springwells at the close of the War of 1812, and it holds deep significance to Native American cultures of the region. The star fort was constructed in 1845, and the federal government transferred the entire property to the City of Detroit in 1976; it is now managed by the city's Parks and Recreation Division as an open riverfront heritage site. Several distinct spaces across the grounds accommodate events of different scales and character. The Old Barracks — the oldest surviving structure on site — is a limestone building whose five ground-floor mess halls suit meetings and indoor gatherings. Founded in 1851, the Academy of the Sacred Heart is Michigan's oldest independent school, set on 28 acres of woodlands in Bloomfield Hills. The chapel seats 250 guests in vintage oak pews and features a stained glass rose window, Italian marble floors, and a communion rail.
