From Galveston to Houston In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch at the Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City. At a special table on the second floor, a particularly fun-loving group of men met regularly. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously enough to do something about it. ​ Billy Florence had been on tour in France and had been invited to a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The exotic style, flavors, and music of the Arabian-themed party inspired him to suggest this as a theme for the new fraternity. Walter Fleming, a devoted fraternity brother, built on Fleming’s ideas and used his knowledge of fraternal ritual to transform the Arabian theme into the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.). ​ With the help of the Knickerbocker Cottage regulars, Fleming drafted the ritual, designed the emblem and costumes, formulated a salutation and declared that members would wear the red fez. The first meeting of Mecca Shriners, the first temple (chapter) established in the United States, was held September 26, 1872. As word got out about the fledgling organization, membership grew rapidly, spreading across the U.S. In the early 1900s, membership spread into Canada, Mexico, and Panama. Today, Shriners International is a fraternity with nearly 200 temples in several countries, thousands of clubs around the world and hundreds of thousands of members dedicated to the principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.

The Historic Magnolia Ballroom occupies a converted 1890s brewery building at 715 Franklin Street in downtown Houston, originally home to the Houston Ice & Brewing Company. The property today hosts wedding receptions, corporate events, galas, quinceaneras, and other private celebrations, alongside its regular calendar of live music and dancing nights. Guests find an open dance floor beneath the building's historic ceiling, a full-service bar, and an on-site museum preserving artifacts from the brewery's history. Brenner's Steakhouse offers a variety of prix fixe meals as well as buffets, carving stations, and served hors d'oeuvres to suit a variety of budgets. The restaurant has a beautiful garden area with waterfalls and a pavilion that is ideal for weddings, receptions, and other special occasions. BURGUNDY ROOM With wine storage, creative artwork, and views of our operating wine cellar, this is a cozy spot. This area can seat up to 22 people for a seated dinner and up to 30 people for cocktails and served hors d'oeuvres. GARDEN ROOM A distinct dining room with mahogany French doors, gorgeous drapes, original artwork, and spectacular views of our lush surroundings. The Garden Room has its own door, patio, and bathrooms. This space can sit 64 people for a seated meal or 100 people for cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres. WATERFALL PATIO You may celebrate a private event for two or a roaring get-together for up to 24 guests in the middle of our garden, bordered with foliage and waterfalls. GARDEN LOUNGE & GARDEN GAZEBO The freshly remodeled Garden Lounge features plush seats, a stately gazebo, and magnificent gas fire pits. This garden haven is the ideal spot for sipping handcrafted cocktails and nibbling on delectable chef-curated snacks. For a seated meal, the Lounge can accommodate up to 10 people, while the Gazebo can accommodate up to 20 guests for cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres.

The Last Concert is a live music venue, historical site, and party venue all rolled into one.
