As a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, we believe that all Americans have a right to learn about their own history by visiting the places that surround us. This historic site is dedicated to filling in the gaps of our cultural heritage, particularly the stories of enslaved and freed Black communities, as well as the stories of their descendants. Take a look at our interpretation themes. All of our properties are on 126 historic acres in Alexandria, Virginia, and they include two historic properties and one working farm. It was built in 1805, and it was given to Nelly Custis and Lawrence Lewis as a gift by President George Washington. The site was used as a plantation, and the couple enslaved over 90 people while operating it. The Pope-Leighey House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is also located on the grounds, where visitors can explore and be inspired by the Usonian architecture and a vision for affordable, well-designed housing that Wright envisioned. We co-own the land with our partner, Arcadia Farm for Sustainable Agriculture, whose mission is to create a more equitable and sustainable local food system in the greater Los Angeles area. Our activities are spread out throughout the grounds and trails, and they are designed to promote learning as well as wellbeing as well as respite and enjoyment of the natural environment and its history. Immersive experiences, exhibitions, performances, and thought-provoking art are used to bring these stories and discussions to life. Across the grounds of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, two historic homes situated on 120 acres of agricultural land farmed by our non-profit partner Arcadia, are intertwined tales of community transformation. Old Town Hall is a stately Colonial Revival building at the heart of the nationally recognized City of Fairfax Historic District. Built in 1900 by Joseph E. Willard — later lieutenant governor of Virginia and U.S. ambassador to Spain — the hall was presented to the Town of Fairfax in 1902 and quickly became the center of Fairfax social life. Its neo-classical design combines Tuscan order columns with Federal-style details, including a fanlight window over the front doors and round-headed gabled dormers. The venue offers two rentable levels: a Main Floor accommodating up to 150 guests and an Upper Level for up to 120, suited to weddings, private parties, and meetings. Adjacent to the hall, the Kitty Pozer Garden offers a shaded, perennial-filled setting for photos, while the neighboring Old Town Square — with its splash pad, pergola, and patio furniture — can be reserved in conjunction with the hall for ceremonies and cocktail hours.

The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center sits in the heart of the City of Fairfax, adjacent to Van Dyck Park and within walking distance of Old Town Fairfax. Operated by the City of Fairfax, the community center offers three flexible rental spaces suited to everything from an intimate meeting to a wedding reception. The Performance Space is the center's largest room, with a wood dance floor and room for up to 333 seated guests or 500 for a standing reception when rented in full; it can also be rented as a half-space accommodating 167 seated or 250 standing. The Mason Family Rehearsal Space holds up to 70 guests, and the Greenfield Family Art Room accommodates up to 60, giving planners smaller options for rehearsal dinners, meetings, and private parties alongside the center's larger events. Rentals include tables and chairs, and the venue is suited to weddings, large events, meetings, and artistic performances, with rental hours extending into the evening on weekends.

Historic Blenheim is a Civil War-era estate in the City of Fairfax, Virginia, operated by the City as an event venue and interpretive center. The centerpiece is a Greek-Revival/Georgian brick house built around 1859 for the Willcoxon family, where Federal soldiers left graffiti on the interior walls during the winter of 1862-63 — a detail that has made the property a stop on both the Virginia Civil War Trails and the Northern Virginia Graffiti Trail. The adjoining Civil War Interpretive Center houses a gallery with a full-sized replica of the house's attic and glass walls that look out over the historic grounds. Set on 12 secluded acres, the property combines that historic backdrop with modern event amenities, making it suited to weddings, anniversary parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, and meetings alike — even a routine meeting takes on a different character in the space. Events can move between an indoor multipurpose room and atrium/lobby and outdoor spaces including a pergola terrace and veranda porch, with additional tent locations available across the grounds for larger gatherings.

Busboys and Poets is a restaurant, bar, bookstore, and community gathering place founded in 2005 by artist, activist, and restaurateur Andy Shallal. The Shirlington location, in Arlington, Virginia, carries forward that mission as a space for art, culture, and politics to intentionally collide, hosting weekly open mic nights and other community programming alongside its full-service restaurant and bookstore. For private events, the location offers two dedicated spaces, the Robeson Room and Paul's Den, each equipped with a projection screen and sound system for readings, performances, meetings, and celebrations. Guests can also arrange a full facility buyout of the entire restaurant through the venue's events team.
